This simple prayer for reconciliation is written for moments when a relationship has been broken by hurt, silence, or misunderstanding and you want to ask God to heal it. Pray it when you are ready to take a first step toward peace, before a difficult conversation, or during a quiet moment when the distance feels heavy. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for Reconciliation

Lord, you know the history between me and this person. You know what was said, what was left unsaid, and the moments when I wanted to be right more than I wanted to be whole. Please search my heart and show me any part I have played in this break, including the pride, the anger, or the fear that kept me from reaching out. Give me the humility to own what is mine without excusing what is not.

I ask you to soften my heart toward them and to soften theirs toward me. Where I have been bitter, replace it with patience. Where I have been tired of trying, give me fresh strength to try again. Go before me into every conversation, and let my words be honest, gentle, and free of blame. Make a way where I see only walls.

Above all, let this relationship reflect your own faithfulness to us. Heal what is broken, restore what can be restored, and give both of us the grace to rest in whatever you choose to do. I trust you with the outcome. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am carrying this hurt between me and another person. Soften my heart and loosen my pride. Help me speak with kindness and listen with patience. Heal what has been broken, and where I cannot bring peace, give me your peace to stand on. Show me the next right step, and give me courage to take it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 5:23-24

23 “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Jesus places reconciliation before worship, which tells you how seriously God takes broken relationships. As you pray, ask him to show you whether there is someone you need to go to first.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Paul acknowledges that peace is not always in our control. Pray this verse by asking God to help you do your part honestly and leave the rest in his hands.

Ephesians 4:31-32

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

This passage names the bitterness and anger that keep relationships frozen and points to kindness and forgiveness as the way out. Pray it slowly, asking God to remove the specific resentments you are holding.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul ties our forgiveness to the forgiveness we have received from Christ. Use this verse to remember that God has already forgiven you, which gives you a foundation for extending grace to someone else.

2 Corinthians 5:18

But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation…

(WEB)

Paul describes God as the one who reconciles us to himself and gives us the ministry of reconciliation. Pray this verse to remember that restoration begins with God’s initiative, not your own strength.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time when you are not rushed, such as early morning with a cup of coffee or in the car before you walk into a house. Sit somewhere you can be still. Some people find it helpful to write the person’s name on a piece of paper and place it in front of them while they pray, so the prayer has a concrete focus.

You might also ask a trusted friend, a pastor, or a small group to pray with you or for you. Tell them what you are praying for in general terms, without sharing details that would expose the other person. Their prayers can steady you on days when your own words feel thin.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who reconciles the world to himself give you patience, courage, and a gentle heart. May he bring peace where there has been distance, and may you walk in that peace whatever the other person chooses to do. The God of grace goes ahead of you into every hard conversation.
