This list gives you Scripture and a short prayer for a farewell gathering, whether you are the one leaving, the one staying behind, or the one who planned the party and wants the moment to mean something. Each verse is chosen for the mixed feelings that come with goodbyes: gratitude, grief, uncertainty and hope. Most of these passages speak of God’s faithfulness across change, the sense that a relationship can continue even when the place or the schedule does not.

Verses for Gratitude and Remembering Good Years

Farewells tend to bring memories to the surface all at once. The verses in this section help you look back with thanks rather than only sadness, recognizing that the people and years you are honoring were themselves gifts.

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3

2 We always give thanks to God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers, 3 remembering without ceasing your work of faith and labor of love and perseverance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father.

(WEB)

Paul thanks God for the believers he is leaving behind, naming their work and their love. Before you give a speech, take a few minutes to list specific things the person has done for the group. Read that list aloud at the gathering so everyone hears what was given.

Philippians 1:3-5

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now…

(WEB)

Paul writes with joy every time he remembers his friends in Philippi. Think of one shared moment that still makes you smile and tell it to someone at the party. Gratitude often grows when it is spoken out loud and shared.

Psalm 77:11

I will remember Yah’s deeds; for I will remember your wonders of old.

(WEB)

The psalmist chooses to remember God’s works when his heart feels heavy. When memories of a shared past start to ache, pause and name one good thing that came out of that season. Let the memory become a source of strength rather than only a loss.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses speaks these words as Israel faces a new leader and a new land. If you are the one leaving, carry this promise with you into the next place. If you are staying, let it be a reminder that the group will still be held in the same faithful hands.

Verses for Saying Goodbye Without Fear

Goodbyes can feel like losses, and the uncertainty about what comes next can weigh heavily. These passages speak to the reality of separation while pointing to a God who goes ahead of us into unfamiliar places.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God gives Joshua courage just before he steps into a role he has never filled. If you are starting over after the farewell, repeat this verse before your first morning in the new setting. Let it be the first thing you think about before you meet anyone new.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of passing through deep waters and fire, not of avoiding them altogether. Many farewells involve crossing a difficult stretch, and this promise is a reassurance that God is present in the crossing. Keep it where you will see it during the first hard weeks.

Matthew 28:20

Teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

(WEB)

Jesus ends Matthew’s Gospel with a promise to be with his followers always. When a person or group is physically separated, this verse offers a presence that does not depend on location. Let it shape how you pray for the people who are moving on.

Psalm 139:7-10

7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

The psalmist finds that God’s presence reaches to every distance, from the heavens to the sea. Wherever you go, this passage assures you that you are not beyond God’s reach. Read it slowly during any travel before or after the gathering.

Verses for Hope in the Next Chapter

A farewell also points forward. The verses in this section encourage you to see God at work in what comes next, whether that is a new job, a new city, a new season of family life or a new role in the same community.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God speaks these words to exiles who had lost their homes and expected nothing good. When you feel unsure about the future, write this verse on a card and tuck it into a suitcase or planner. Return to it whenever you feel the pull toward worry.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven…

(WEB)

The writer observes that every season has its time, including the seasons of leaving and beginning. Use this verse to remind yourself that an ending is one part of a larger rhythm. You can name the current season honestly without deciding it is the final one.

Revelation 21:5

He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

(WEB)

God declares that he is making all things new. At a farewell, this verse can be a hopeful closing thought, pointing to a God who is still creating and renewing. Share it on a card with the person leaving as a blessing for their next season.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Even in deep grief, the writer remembers that God’s mercies are renewed every morning. If you wake up on the first day after the party feeling empty, read this passage before you check your phone. Let each new morning be a fresh opportunity to receive mercy.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that match the mood of your gathering rather than trying to read them all. You might write one verse on a card for each guest, or print a short list for the table where people can add their own memories beside the Scripture. A card with a verse and a handwritten note often becomes something the person keeps for years.

Read these passages aloud before the party and again in the quiet hours after it ends. Pray them for the person leaving, asking God to go with them, and pray them for the people staying, asking God to strengthen the bonds that remain. Repetition helps the words settle into your memory where they can comfort you later.

A Short Prayer for a Farewell Gathering

Lord, you have been with us in every room where we have shared our lives, and you will be with us in every place we go next. We thank you for the people we are saying goodbye to today and for the good ways they have shaped us. Hold them as they step into what is new, and give them courage when the road feels unfamiliar. Keep the friendships we have built strong across the miles, and let the love we practiced here continue wherever we live. Teach us to trust your faithfulness when the future looks uncertain. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord go before you and beside you, and may his peace settle on your heart as you leave this place. May you remember with gratitude all that was shared here, and may you carry that love into every new room you enter. May you be strengthened when you feel weak, and may the faithful presence of God meet you in every unfamiliar street. Go in peace, and know that you are always held.
