Zechariah 6 closes the sequence of night visions with a vision of four chariots, then a symbolic coronation of a high priest named Joshua. These questions help a small group, Sunday class or personal reader move through the chapter verse by verse, from what the text shows to what it means and how it shapes daily faith. Each section includes a leader’s note so you can run the session without preparing a separate summary.

Zechariah 6 at a Glance

The chapter opens with Zechariah seeing four chariots drawn by horses of different colors, coming out from between two bronze mountains. An angel explains that they are the winds of heaven, sent out from the presence of the Lord of all the earth to patrol the world. The vision ends with the report that the northern horses have settled the Lord’s spirit, which suggests that God’s purpose has been accomplished there.

The second half shifts to a command to make crowns from silver and gold and place them on the head of Joshua the high priest. The prophet then speaks of a man called the Branch who will build the Lord’s temple, rule on his throne and serve as priest, with a counsel of peace between them. The chapter closes with the promise that people from far away will come and help build, and that this will be confirmed by obedience to the Lord’s voice.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask the group to point to the words in the text and avoid explaining them yet. Short answers are fine, and the goal is to build a shared picture of the chapter.

Zechariah 6:1-3

1 Again I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and behold, four chariots came out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass. 2 In the first chariot were red horses; in the second chariot black horses; 3 in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot dappled horses, all of them powerful.

Read this opening passage aloud to set the scene for the vision. The vivid imagery helps the group settle into the chapter and notice details they may otherwise skip. Pause after verse 3 so the colors and chariots can register before moving on.

Zechariah 6:5

The angel answered me, “These are the four winds of the sky, which go out from standing before the Lord of all the earth.

(WEB)

This verse gives the angel’s explanation of the horses and winds, which is the key to understanding the whole vision. Reading it aloud helps the group hear that the interpretation comes from heaven. Ask someone to read it slowly so the phrase about standing before the Lord has space to land.

Zechariah 6:11-13

11 Yes, take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest; 12 and speak to him, saying, ‘The LORD of Armies says, “Behold, the man whose name is the Branch: and he shall grow up out of his place; and he shall build the LORD’s temple; 13 even he shall build the LORD’s temple; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule on his throne; and he shall be a priest on his throne; and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

(WEB)

These verses contain the coronation command and the description of the Branch, so they form the heart of the chapter. Read them together so the group hears how the crowns and the future leader are connected. Allow a moment of silence afterward before asking any questions.

Zechariah 6:14

The crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to Hen the son of Zephaniah, for a memorial in the LORD’s temple.

(WEB)

This verse explains that the crowns will serve as a memorial in the temple. Reading it aloud reminds the group that God keeps records of faithful gifts and promises. Use it to open discussion about what memorials mean in your own congregation or family.

Zechariah 6:15

Those who are far off shall come and build in the LORD’s temple; and you shall know that the LORD of Armies has sent me to you. This will happen, if you will diligently obey the LORD your God’s voice.”’”

(WEB)

The chapter closes with a call to diligent obedience and the promise that people from far away will come. Reading this last verse aloud sends the group out with a clear challenge. End the session by asking each person to name one way they will obey this week.

Memory Verse for Zechariah 6

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come before you thankful that you rule over the winds, the nations and the events that often feel beyond our control. Thank you for the promise of a faithful builder who will finish what you have begun, and for the reminder that you keep a record of every faithful gift. Help us to offer what we have, whether it is time, money or quiet obedience, trusting that you will use it for your purposes. Teach us to listen for your voice this week and to act on what we hear. Give us patience when the work feels slow and gratitude when you bring it to completion. In the name of the Branch, we pray. Amen.
