Zechariah 2 shows a surveyor measuring Jerusalem, then a message that the city will be too full for walls because the LORD himself will be its protection and its glory. This page gives you a full set of observation, interpretation and application questions, with leader’s notes, for a small group, a Sunday class or personal study. Each section can be used on its own.

Zechariah 2 at a Glance

The chapter opens with a vision. Zechariah sees a man with a measuring line heading out to survey Jerusalem, and an angel runs to stop him. The message given is that Jerusalem will spread beyond its walls because of the people and animals filling it, and that God will be a wall of fire around it and its glory within it.

The second half turns to the exiles still scattered in the north and in Babylon. They are called to come home, and the nations that plundered Zion will be judged. The chapter closes with the promise that many nations will join the LORD, that he will dwell among his people, and that all flesh should be silent before him as he rouses himself from his holy place.

Observation Questions

Use these first, before anyone offers an opinion. Ask the group to point to the exact words in the text before answering, and let people read the verses aloud again if needed. Keep the discussion anchored in what the chapter actually says.

Zechariah 2:4-5

4 And said to him, “Run, speak to this young man, saying, ‘Jerusalem will be inhabited as villages without walls, because of the multitude of men and livestock in it. 5 For I,’ says the LORD, ‘will be to her a wall of fire around it, and I will be the glory in the middle of her.

Read this passage early to set the picture of a city too full to be contained and the promise that the LORD himself will be its wall and its glory. It anchors the rest of the discussion in the central image of the chapter.

Zechariah 2:5

For I,’ says the LORD, ‘will be to her a wall of fire around it, and I will be the glory in the middle of her.

(WEB)

This single verse gives the heart of the promise in one sentence, so reading it alone lets the group pause over the image of God as a wall of fire and as the glory within.

Zechariah 2:8

For the LORD of Armies says: ‘For honor he has sent me to the nations which plundered you; for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye.

Reading this verse aloud brings out the tenderness of God toward his people and the seriousness with which he regards harm done to them, which will shape the application questions that follow.

Zechariah 2:10-11

10 Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion; for, behold, I come, and I will dwell within you,’ says the LORD. 11 Many nations shall join themselves to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people; and I will dwell among you, and you shall know that the LORD of Armies has sent me to you.

These verses carry the invitation to sing and rejoice and the promise that God will dwell among his people and draw the nations to himself. They work well as a turning point in the session.

Zechariah 2:13

Be silent, all flesh, before the LORD; for he has roused himself from his holy habitation!”

(WEB)

End the reading of key verses with this call to silence before the LORD, which often gives a group a natural moment to pause and pray before moving into closing discussion.

Memory Verse for Zechariah 2

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you as people who often build our own walls and trust our own plans. Thank you that you have promised to be a wall of fire around your people and the glory in the middle of them. Teach us to rest in your presence rather than in our defenses, and to treat the people around us with the tenderness you show toward the apple of your eye. Give us grace to rejoice in your coming and to welcome others into the hope you have given to us. Quiet our hearts before you, as the chapter calls all flesh to be silent before you, and let us leave this time more aware of your nearness. Amen.
