Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible, just two verses, and it calls every nation and people to praise the LORD because of his loving kindness and faithfulness. These questions are built for a small group, a Sunday class, or a quiet personal study. They move from what the text says, to what it means, to how it shapes daily life.

Psalm 117 at a Glance

The psalm opens with a wide summons: all nations and all peoples are invited to praise the LORD. It then gives the reason in a single sentence, pairing his loving kindness with his faithfulness, and it closes with a shout of praise. The whole chapter moves from the big picture of the world to the steady character of God.

Because the psalm is so brief, a leader can read it aloud two or three times in the session. The questions below assume that familiarity and lean on the exact wording, so repetition in the room is helpful.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an opinion. Ask the group to answer only from the words on the page, and to point to the verse when they can. This slows the room down and keeps the discussion anchored in the text.

Psalm 117:1

Praise the LORD, all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples!

(WEB)

Read this verse first to set the wide scope of the psalm. Hearing the call to all nations aloud helps the group feel how large the invitation is before the reason is given.

Psalm 117:2

For his loving kindness is great toward us. The LORD’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise Yah!

(WEB)

This is the heart of the psalm, naming both God’s loving kindness and his enduring faithfulness. Reading it slowly lets the group hear the reason behind the call to praise.

Psalm 117:1-2

1 Praise the LORD, all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples! 2 For his loving kindness is great toward us. The LORD’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise Yah!

(WEB)

Reading the whole psalm together allows the group to experience the movement from invitation to reason. It is useful at the start or end of the session to tie the discussion back to the text.

Memory Verse for Psalm 117

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come together because you are worthy of praise from every nation and every people. Thank you that your loving kindness is great toward us, and that your faithfulness endures forever, even when our circumstances change. Help us to remember this when our days feel uncertain, and give us words of thanks that come easily from the heart. Widen our hearts to include those we do not yet know, so that our praise joins the chorus of the whole earth. We long to say “Praise Yah!” with honesty and joy. Keep us in your steady love as we go out from this place. Amen.
