This guide offers Bible study questions for Psalm 112, with leader’s notes for each one. It suits a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study with a notebook. Psalm 112 describes the person who fears the Lord and delights in his commands, and it traces how that person’s life looks in family, money, fear and generosity. You can use the questions in order or pick the sets that fit your group’s time.

Psalm 112 at a Glance

The psalm opens with a blessing on the person who fears the Lord and takes delight in his commandments (verses 1-3). It then moves through the blessings that flow from that life: children who are strong, light in dark places, and a reputation that lasts. Verses 4-6 describe the upright person as gracious, merciful and generous, the one who lends and deals fairly.

The last section (verses 7-10) pictures that person facing bad news and hostile people without panic, because the heart is fixed on the Lord. It closes with a sharp contrast: the wicked watch, grieve and fade away. The psalm is a wisdom poem, so it teaches by setting two ways of life side by side.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask the group to point to the words on the page and to answer from the text alone. Give people a minute of silence before taking answers, and write down what they notice without correcting it yet.

Psalm 112:1

Praise Yah! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in his commandments.

Read this opening line first to set the tone for the whole psalm. It names the blessed person by the posture of fearing the Lord and delighting in his commands, which frames everything that follows.

Psalm 112:4-5

4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright, gracious, merciful, and righteous. 5 It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends. He will maintain his cause in judgment.

(WEB)

These verses describe the upright person’s character and generosity in concrete terms. Reading them aloud lets the group hear how lending and grace are tied to righteousness, which often sparks good discussion.

Psalm 112:6-8

6 For he will never be shaken. The righteous will be remembered forever. 7 He will not be afraid of evil news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is established. He will not be afraid in the end when he sees his adversaries.

(WEB)

This passage speaks of stability, memory and a steady heart in the face of fear. Reading it aloud gives the group a chance to slow down and let the image of an established heart settle in.

Psalm 112:9

He has dispersed, he has given to the poor. His righteousness endures forever. His horn will be exalted with honor.

(WEB)

This verse shows the lasting effect of giving to the poor and links it to enduring righteousness and honor. Reading it aloud reminds the group that generosity is part of a long-lasting life before God.

Psalm 112:10

The wicked will see it, and be grieved. He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away. The desire of the wicked will perish.

(WEB)

Ending with this verse brings the psalm’s contrast into focus and gives the group a sober close to the reading. Pause afterward and invite silent reflection on what the psalm wants its readers to be shaped into.

Memory Verse for Psalm 112

Psalm 112:7

He will not be afraid of evil news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

(WEB)

This verse is a good memory choice because it names a steady heart trusting in the Lord, a truth people can recall in anxious moments. Encourage the group to repeat it together and to say it aloud when news feels frightening.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you as people who want to fear you and delight in your commands. Thank you that Psalm 112 describes a life that is steady, generous and full of light even in dark seasons. Form in each of us a heart that is established in you, so that bad news does not undo us. Make us gracious and merciful toward those around us, ready to lend, give and act with fairness. Let our households and our friendships reflect the blessing of a life lived under your Word. Where we are afraid, give us courage, and where we are tempted to hoard or harden, soften our hands and hearts. Hold us together as we go, and let our faithfulness outlast our fears. Amen.
