Proverbs 7 is a warning about sexual temptation, told as a story: a young man without sense walks toward a seductive woman’s house, and the father urging him to listen lays out what that path costs. This page gives questions and leader’s notes for the whole chapter, so a small group, a Sunday class or someone studying alone can work through it from start to finish without a separate commentary.

Proverbs 7 at a Glance

The chapter opens with a father urging his son to hold fast to wisdom and to treat it as family (verses 1-5). He then describes what he saw from his window: a young man with no understanding, walking at night toward the corner where a woman waits (verses 6-9). Her speech is the center of the chapter, smooth and specific, promising comfort while hiding a trap (verses 10-20).

The final section draws the moral. The young man follows her like an animal to slaughter, the father makes a plea to his sons to pay attention and not turn their hearts aside, and he ends with a stark picture of where her house leads (verses 21-27).

Observation Questions

Use these first. Ask the group to answer from the text alone, pointing to verses, before anyone offers an interpretation. Let the quiet stretch a little before you move on.

Proverbs 7:1-3

1 My son, keep my words. Lay up my commandments within you. 2 Keep my commandments and live! Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye. 3 Bind them on your fingers. Write them on the tablet of your heart.

Read this at the start to set the father’s tone of urgency and love. It frames the whole chapter as an invitation to keep wisdom close, which gives the group a reason to listen carefully to the warning that follows.

Proverbs 7:6-9

6 For at the window of my house, I looked out through my lattice. 7 I saw among the simple ones. I discerned among the youths a young man void of understanding, 8 passing through the street near her corner, he went the way to her house, 9 in the twilight, in the evening of the day, in the middle of the night and in the darkness.

This passage gives the scene in concrete detail, so reading it aloud helps the group picture the window, the young man and the dark streets. Pause afterward and ask what the father is trying to show his son by describing it so carefully.

Proverbs 7:21-23

21 With persuasive words, she led him astray. With the flattering of her lips, she seduced him. 22 He followed her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, as a fool stepping into a noose. 23 Until an arrow strikes through his liver, as a bird hurries to the snare, and doesn’t know that it will cost his life.

Reading the three images of the ox, the fool and the bird aloud makes the danger vivid. It is the emotional center of the warning, and it helps the group feel how quickly a person can be drawn in.

Proverbs 7:24-25

24 Now therefore, sons, listen to me. Pay attention to the words of my mouth. 25 Don’t let your heart turn to her ways. Don’t go astray in her paths…

(WEB)

These short verses contain the father’s direct plea to his sons. Reading them slowly, one sentence at a time, lets the call to attention land before the group moves into discussion.

Proverbs 7:26-27

26 For she has thrown down many wounded. Yes, all her slain are a mighty army. 27 Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the rooms of death.

(WEB)

End the reading on this sober picture of the many who have fallen and the house that leads to death. Ending here gives the group a clear sense of stakes before the closing prayer.

Memory Verse for Proverbs 7

Proverbs 7:25

Don’t let your heart turn to her ways. Don’t go astray in her paths…

(WEB)

This single line is short enough to memorize and gives a clear command: do not let your heart turn toward her ways. Encourage the group to repeat it during the week whenever a temptation feels close.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you as people who know how easily our hearts can turn aside. Keep your words close to us, bind them on our hands and write them on the tablet of our hearts. Give us wisdom to notice the twilight streets in our own lives and the courage to walk away from them. Where we have already been drawn in, meet us with mercy and bring us back to your paths. Protect the people in this room and the people they love, and make us a community that encourages one another toward life. Amen.
