Numbers 7 describes the offerings the tribal leaders of Israel brought to dedicate the tabernacle and its altar, one leader on each of twelve days. These questions help a small group, a Sunday class, or a personal reader work through the chapter by looking at what the text says, what it means, and how it shapes daily life. Each set moves from observation to interpretation to application.

Numbers 7 at a Glance

The chapter opens after Moses has finished setting up the tabernacle and anointing it along with its furniture and vessels. The tribal princes then present six covered wagons and twelve oxen, which Moses distributes to the Levitical families according to the work each one carries. The Gershonites and Merarites receive wagons because their duties involve moving heavier components, while the Kohathites receive none because they carry the sacred objects on their shoulders.

From there the chapter becomes a repeated pattern. Twelve princes, one per tribe, bring identical offerings on successive days: silver dishes filled with flour and oil, a golden ladle of incense, and a set of animals for burnt, sin, and peace offerings. The repetition is deliberate, giving each tribe equal honor and recording every gift in full, so that no contribution is overlooked.

Observation Questions

Use these questions to slow the group down and read the text closely before anyone offers an opinion. Ask a member to read the verses aloud first, then invite quick answers that stay close to the words on the page.

Numbers 7:1

On the day that Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle, and had anointed it and sanctified it, with all its furniture, and the altar with all its vessels, and had anointed and sanctified them…

This verse sets the scene by linking the offerings to the completed and anointed tabernacle. Reading it first helps the group understand that the gifts came after the sanctuary was set apart for God.

Numbers 7:5

“Accept these from them, that they may be used in doing the service of the Tent of Meeting; and you shall give them to the Levites, to every man according to his service.”

(WEB)

God’s direct word to Moses shows that the gifts were received as a service to the Tent of Meeting. Reading it aloud lets the group hear God’s own instruction about how the offerings should be used.

Numbers 7:9

But to the sons of Kohath he gave none, because the service of the sanctuary belonged to them; they carried it on their shoulders.

This short verse explains why the Kohathites received no wagons, a detail that often surprises readers. Hearing it aloud helps the group appreciate the distinct calling of each family.

Numbers 7:12-14

12 He who offered his offering the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah, 13 and his offering was: one silver platter, the weight of which was one hundred thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 14 one golden ladle of ten shekels, full of incense…

These verses introduce the first offering and its precise items, giving the pattern that repeats through the chapter. Reading them together helps the group see the detail that Israel’s worship required.

Numbers 7:88-89

88 And all the cattle for the sacrifice of peace offerings twenty-four bulls, the rams sixty, the male goats sixty, the male lambs a year old sixty. This was the dedication of the altar, after it was anointed. 89 When Moses went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with the LORD, he heard his voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the Testimony, from between the two cherubim: and he spoke to him.

The chapter closes with the total of the dedication offerings and Moses entering the tent to speak with the LORD. Reading the ending aloud reminds the group that the whole dedication led to God’s presence and communication.

Memory Verse for Numbers 7

Numbers 7:89

When Moses went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with the LORD, he heard his voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the Testimony, from between the two cherubim: and he spoke to him.

(WEB)

This verse records Moses entering the tent to speak with God and hearing the voice speak from above the mercy seat. It is a good memory verse because it points from the offerings to the God who meets with His people.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank You that You welcome our gifts and our service, whether they are large or small. Help us to give freely, as the princes gave, and to honor the different callings You have placed among us. Teach us to carry our responsibilities faithfully, to lean on one another when the load is heavy, and to return to You daily with open hands. Thank You for meeting with Your people and for drawing us into fellowship with You. Amen.
