Joshua 10 describes the southern campaign of Israel, when five Amorite kings gathered against Gibeon and Joshua came to its defense. These questions are written for a small group, a Sunday school class, or personal study, and each set moves from what the chapter says, to what it means, to how it shapes daily life. Leaders can use them in order or choose the ones that fit the time available.

Joshua 10 at a Glance

The chapter opens with Adoni-Zedek of Jerusalem alarmed that Gibeon has made peace with Israel, so he rallies four neighboring kings to attack the town. Gibeon appeals to Joshua, who marches through the night and routs the coalition, aided by a dramatic display of God’s power over the sky. The five kings flee to a cave, are sealed in, and are later brought out and executed before the army moves on to take Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron and Debir.

The chapter closes with a summary of the whole southern conquest and a return to the camp at Gilgal. The narrative repeatedly credits the LORD with the victory, which makes it a useful text for asking how God and human effort relate in the story.

Observation Questions

Use this set first to establish what the text actually says. Ask each question, let several people answer from the passage itself, and only then move to meaning. Keep the discussion anchored to the verses rather than to outside commentary.

Joshua 10:8

The LORD said to Joshua, “Don’t fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Not a man of them will stand before you.”

(WEB)

This verse gives the central assurance of the chapter, that the LORD has delivered the enemies into Joshua’s hands. Reading it early sets the tone for the rest of the narrative and frames the battle as God’s work.

Joshua 10:11

As they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth Horon, the LORD hurled down great stones from the sky on them to Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the children of Israel killed with the sword.

(WEB)

The description of the hailstones from the sky shows the scale of God’s action against the enemy. Reading it aloud helps the group notice the vivid detail the writer chose and the way it underlines divine power.

Joshua 10:14

There was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD listened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.

(WEB)

This verse explains why the day is singled out in the narrative, because the LORD fought for Israel. It gives the group a clear statement of the chapter’s theological claim and a good place to begin interpretation.

Joshua 10:25

Joshua said to them, “Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Be strong and courageous, for the LORD will do this to all your enemies against whom you fight.”

(WEB)

Joshua’s words to the commanders offer direct encouragement grounded in God’s future action. Reading it aloud is useful for application discussions about courage and fear.

Joshua 10:42

Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

(WEB)

The summary verse gathers the campaign into a single statement of God’s involvement. Ending the reading with it allows the group to step back and see the whole sweep of the chapter.

Memory Verse for Joshua 10

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you as people who face opposition, pressure and fear in many different forms. Thank you that in Joshua 10 you went before your people and fought for them, and that your promises do not depend on our strength. Give us the courage Joshua called his commanders to, and help us move quickly when others ask us for help, as he did for Gibeon. Where we are tempted to trust only in ourselves, remind us that the victory belongs to you. Bless each person in this room with the assurance that you are with them in what they face this week. Amen.
