Genesis 38 is the chapter that interrupts Joseph’s story to tell the sad and surprising account of Judah, his sons and his daughter-in-law Tamar. These questions are for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. Each set is built so a leader can read the chapter aloud, pause, and move through the discussion without preparing a separate summary.

Genesis 38 at a Glance

The chapter opens with Judah leaving his brothers and marrying into a Canaanite family. Two of his sons, Er and Onan, die after displeasing the LORD, and Judah withholds his third son from Tamar, who had been given to Er. Tamar then takes matters into her own hands, disguises herself, and becomes pregnant by Judah himself.

When Judah learns of her pregnancy, he condemns her before discovering the truth through the pledge items he gave her. His public admission in verse 26 marks the turning point, and the chapter closes with the birth of twins, Perez and Zerah, whose story continues into the line of David.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers interpretation. Ask the group to point to specific words and verses, and keep the focus on what the text plainly says. Let people answer briefly and return to the passage when opinions start to drift.

Genesis 38:7

Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the LORD’s sight. The LORD killed him.

(WEB)

Read this verse early to establish the cause of Er’s death and to show the group how the narrator links judgment with the LORD’s sight. It sets the tone for the chapter and gives the group a reference point for later questions about Judah’s family.

Genesis 38:9-10

9 Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother. 10 The thing which he did was evil in the LORD’s sight, and he killed him also.

(WEB)

These verses describe Onan’s refusal and the LORD’s response, and reading them aloud helps the group hear the pattern of the first two deaths. Pause afterward to ask what the text says about the motive behind Onan’s actions.

Genesis 38:14

She took off her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.

(WEB)

Reading this verse slowly lets the group picture Tamar sitting at the gate and understand why she takes the step she does. It is a good moment to ask why the narrator includes the detail that Shelah had grown up.

Genesis 38:18

He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.

(WEB)

This verse records the exchange of the pledge items, which become central to the chapter’s turning point. Reading it aloud helps the group follow the conversation and prepare for the later reveal in verse 25.

Genesis 38:26

Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.

(WEB)

Judah’s admission is the moral center of the chapter, so reading it near the end of the discussion gives the group a clear focal point. Allow a moment of silence afterward before moving to application questions.

Memory Verse for Genesis 38

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you having read a story full of broken promises, hidden sin and surprising grace. We confess the ways we delay what is right, protect our reputations, and hope others will not notice our failures. Teach us to be honest when we are shown our wrongs, and give us the courage to pursue justice without deceiving those around us. Thank you that you continue your purposes through flawed people and messy families. Help each of us trust that you are still at work in our lives, and lead us to take the next faithful step you show us. Amen.
