Genesis 1:29 tells us that God gave the first humans every seed-bearing plant and every fruit-bearing tree as their food. The verse is God speaking directly to the first man and woman, right after he has created them and given them authority over the earth. It shows that from the very beginning, God provided generously for the people he made and the world he filled with life.

God said, “Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food.

What Genesis 1:29 Means

The verse opens with God saying, “Behold, I have given you,” which signals that this is a gift being announced with attention, not an afterthought. The phrase “every herb yielding seed” refers to the grains, vegetables, and plants that scatter seed and feed people and animals alike. The phrase “every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed” points to orchards and trees whose fruit carries seeds for the next generation, so the food supply itself keeps reproducing.

The verse does not describe a full menu for every future season, nor does it settle every question about what people may eat later in the story. It also does not promise that food will always be easy to come by. What it does show is God’s intention: a world stocked with nourishment, given freely, and meant to sustain human life.

The Context of Genesis 1:29

Genesis is the first book of the Torah, traditionally attributed to Moses, and it opens the Bible’s account of creation, humanity, and God’s relationship with the world. Its first readers were the people of Israel, who needed to understand where they came from and who God is. The creation account in chapter one unfolds in six days, and verse 29 falls on the sixth day, when God makes humanity in his image.

Just before verse 29, God gives humans dominion over the fish, birds, and living creatures, and blesses them to be fruitful and fill the earth. Just after it, verse 30 extends food to the animals and birds. Read this way, verse 29 is part of a single picture in which God provides for humans and animals alike, and the whole creation is then declared “very good” in verse 31.

Key Phrases in Genesis 1:29

Psalm 104:14

He causes the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may produce food out of the earth…

(WEB)

This psalm praises God as the one who makes grass grow for the cattle and plants for people to cultivate, bringing food from the earth. It echoes the provision described in Genesis 1:29 and shows the same God still sustaining his creation.

Matthew 6:11

Give us today our daily bread.

(WEB)

Jesus teaches his followers to ask God for daily bread, placing ordinary food within a relationship of trust and dependence. The prayer carries forward the Genesis picture of God as the one who supplies what people need to live.

A Short Prayer From Genesis 1:29

Father, you gave the first people every plant and fruit to be their food, and you have never stopped caring for the world you made. Thank you for the bread on our table, the seeds that grow into harvest, and the many hands that bring food to us. Help us receive your provision with open hands, and teach us to trust you when our needs feel uncertain. Amen.
