This page gives you ready-made Bible study questions for Exodus 33, with a leader’s answer or discussion note for each one. It works for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. Exodus 33 covers the moment after Israel’s golden calf sin, when God says he will send them toward the promised land but will not go with them, and Moses pleads until God promises his own presence.
Exodus 33 at a Glance
God tells Moses to lead the people up to the land he promised their ancestors, and he will send an angel ahead of them. But God says he will not travel among them, because they are a stiff-necked people and he might destroy them along the way. The people hear this as terrible news and mourn, removing their jewelry as a sign of grief.
Moses then takes the tent of meeting outside the camp, and the pillar of cloud stands at its door while God speaks with him face to face. Moses asks to know God’s way and God’s glory, and God answers that his presence will go with them and that he will show grace and mercy as he chooses.
Observation Questions
Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask the group to point to the exact words and phrases in the text. Let people read the chapter aloud once before you begin, and allow silence for people to find details.
Exodus 33:14
He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
(WEB)
Read this verse early in the session because it contains God’s central promise to Moses. Ask the group to hear the word presence and consider how it answers the earlier concern about God’s absence.
Exodus 33:15-16
15 He said to him, “If your presence doesn’t go with me, don’t carry us up from here. 16 For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn’t it that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?”
(WEB)
Moses’ plea here is the heart of the chapter. Reading it aloud helps the group feel the force of his argument that God’s presence alone sets his people apart.
Exodus 33:19
He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the LORD’s name before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”
(WEB)
This verse names God’s goodness and mercy in his own words. Reading it slowly invites reflection on how God describes himself in a moment of holy distance.
Exodus 33:20-21
20 He said, “You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live.” 21 The LORD also said, “Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock.
(WEB)
Here God explains the limits of human sight and then provides a place to stand. Reading these verses together helps the group see both the holiness and the kindness of God in one passage.
Exodus 33:22-23
22 It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; 23 then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”
(WEB)
This closing image of the cleft of the rock and the passing glory is memorable and vivid. Reading it last in the list gives the group a picture to take with them.
Memory Verse for Exodus 33
A Closing Prayer for the Group
Father, we come to you as Moses did, longing to know your way and to rest in your presence. We confess that we too often rely on other things for our security and forget how much we need you near. Thank you that you are gracious and merciful, and that you do not leave us to walk alone. Teach us to seek your face in prayer and Scripture, to grieve our sin honestly, and to trust your goodness when we cannot see the whole path. Go with us this week, Lord, and let us know that we are your people. Amen.
