Deuteronomy 2 tells the story of Israel’s long journey through the wilderness after the failed attempt to enter the land at Kadesh Barnea. Moses recounts how God directed the people around the territories of Edom, Moab and Ammon, then gave them victory over King Sihon of Heshbon. These questions are written for a small group, a Sunday class or personal study, and they move from what the text says to what it means and how it shapes daily life.

Deuteronomy 2 at a Glance

The chapter opens with a long detour around Mount Seir, the land of Esau’s descendants, which God tells Israel not to invade. Moses then describes the thirty-eight years of wandering that followed the older generation’s refusal to trust God, and notes that God’s hand was against them until that generation had died out.

From there the narrative turns to the next stages: passing Moab and Ammon, both protected as relatives of Israel, and then facing Sihon king of Heshbon, who refuses passage. God gives Israel victory, and the chapter closes with the conquest of Sihon’s cities. Leaders can use the questions below in order, since each section builds on the story as it unfolds.

Observation Questions

Use these questions to slow the group down and let the text speak before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask each question, give a minute of silence, then invite people to point to the verses that answer it before adding their own thoughts.

Deuteronomy 2:7

For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years, the LORD your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.

(WEB)

This verse sums up God’s faithful presence through the wilderness years. Reading it aloud helps the group hear the chapter’s central comfort before the harder passages.

Deuteronomy 2:14

The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea, until we had come over the brook Zered, were thirty-eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as the LORD swore to them.

(WEB)

Reading this verse aloud gives the group the timeline of the wilderness and the sober reason behind it. It anchors the discussion of judgment and delay.

Deuteronomy 2:19

When you come near the border of the children of Ammon, don’t bother them, nor contend with them; for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession; because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.”

(WEB)

This command to leave Ammon’s land alone shows God’s respect for other peoples’ inheritance. Reading it aloud prompts reflection on restraint and boundaries.

Deuteronomy 2:25

Today I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole sky, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of you.”

(WEB)

This verse records God’s promise to begin putting fear on the nations before Israel arrives. Reading it aloud helps the group see that the victory belongs to God.

Deuteronomy 2:30

But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for the LORD your God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today.

(WEB)

This verse names God’s sovereignty over even Sihon’s refusal. Reading it aloud raises the question of divine purpose in hard events, which the group should handle with care.

Memory Verse for Deuteronomy 2

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank You for being with us through every long and quiet stretch, just as You were with Israel in the wilderness. Help us to trust Your provision when our own hands feel empty, and to honor the boundaries and gifts You have given to others. Where we are tempted to press forward in our own strength, teach us to pursue peace first and to wait on Your timing. Shape our hearts to remember that every victory and every season belongs to You. Amen.
