This page gives you questions and leader’s notes for studying 1 John 5 in a small group, a Sunday class, or on your own. The chapter speaks to what it means to be born of God, to overcome the world through faith, and to know with confidence that you have eternal life in the Son. The questions below move from what the text says, to what it means, to how it shapes everyday living.

1 John 5 at a Glance

John opens by tying faith in Jesus as the Christ to new birth and to love for God’s children. He then links love for God to keeping his commandments, and describes faith as the victory that overcomes the world. Verses 6 through 12 turn to testimony: the water, the blood, and the Spirit all bear witness that Jesus is the Son of God, and whoever receives that witness has life in him.

The final section, verses 13 through 21, returns to assurance. John writes so that believers may know they have eternal life, speaks of confident prayer, addresses sin that leads and does not lead to death, and closes with a warning to guard against idols. Leaders can move through the questions in this order without a separate summary.

Observation Questions

Use these questions at the start of the session to slow the group down and anchor everyone in the actual wording of the chapter. Ask people to point to words in the text before offering any explanation. Let silence sit for a moment before moving on.

1 John 5:4-5

4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

(WEB)

Read these two verses early in the session to focus the group on faith as the victory over the world. They establish the central claim that a believer’s trust in Jesus as the Son of God is what overcomes. Pause after reading and ask people to restate the claim in their own words.

1 John 5:11-12

11 The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn’t have God’s Son doesn’t have the life.

(WEB)

These verses state plainly where eternal life is found, which makes them a good anchor for discussion of assurance. Reading them aloud helps the group hear the repeated word “life” and the repeated phrase “the Son.” Use them to lead into the questions about what it means to have the Son.

1 John 5:14-15

14 This is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. 15 And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.

(WEB)

Reading these verses before a time of prayer sets the tone for confident asking. They tie boldness to God’s will and remind the group that prayer rests on relationship and trust. Consider reading them again just before closing the session together.

1 John 5:16

If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life for those who sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death. I don’t say that he should make a request concerning this.

(WEB)

This verse calls believers to pray for a brother who is sinning, which makes it a practical text for a group that cares for one another. Reading it aloud invites a conversation about mutual responsibility within the church. Handle the surrounding questions about sin leading to death with care and a spirit of humility.

1 John 5:20-21

20 We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

(WEB)

John’s closing words gather together knowledge, truth, eternal life, and the warning against idols. Reading them last gives the group a clear and memorable ending to the study. Let the final words about idols linger, and invite a brief moment of quiet reflection before prayer.

Memory Verse for 1 John 5

1 John 5:13

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

(WEB)

This verse states John’s purpose in writing: that believers may know they have eternal life and continue to trust in the Son of God. It is a strong verse to memorize because it names both assurance and perseverance. Encourage the group to repeat it aloud together at the close of the session.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you have given us eternal life, and that this life is found in your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to believe that he is the Christ and to love you and your children with honest and obedient hearts. Where we feel the pull of the world, remind us that our faith is the victory, and give us courage to trust you in each hard moment. Teach us to pray with confidence, asking according to your will, and to care for one another when a brother or sister stumbles. Guard us from idols of every kind, and keep us close to the true God. Amen.
