This page gives you ready-to-use study questions for 1 John 3, with leader’s notes for each one. It works for a small group, a Sunday class or a personal quiet time. The chapter is John’s call to recognize God’s love, live in holiness, and show that love in practical action toward other believers.

1 John 3 at a Glance

The chapter moves in three steps. It opens with the wonder of being called children of God and the promise that we will one day be like Jesus. It then turns to the contrast between practicing sin and practicing righteousness, showing that real faith produces a changed life. The final section ties love to action, showing that love is proven by what we do for a brother or sister in need.

Because the passage returns again and again to the same pairs of ideas (light and darkness, life and death, truth and deception), you can group the questions around those contrasts. Each set below follows the chapter in order so your group can move through it naturally.

Observation Questions

Use these questions at the start of the session to slow the group down and get everyone looking at the actual words of the text before anyone offers a meaning. Ask people to point to the verse that supports each answer.

1 John 3:1-2

1 See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it is not yet revealed what we will be. But we know that, when he is revealed, we will be like him; for we will see him just as he is.

Read these verses first to set the tone of the whole session. They celebrate the Father’s love and the present identity of believers as God’s children, which keeps the later challenges from sounding like a list of burdens.

1 John 3:16

By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

(WEB)

This verse defines love by the cross and then calls us to a costly response. Reading it aloud helps the group feel the weight of the chapter’s central claim before discussing what it asks of them.

1 John 3:18

My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.

(WEB)

A short, direct command that cuts through easy talk about love. Read it slowly and invite silence afterward, giving people room to think about where their words and actions have drifted apart.

1 John 3:20-21

20 Because if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 21 Beloved, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have boldness toward God…

(WEB)

These verses bring comfort to anxious or self-critical hearts. Reading them aloud reminds the group that God’s knowledge is larger than our fears, and that honest assurance is possible for people who are still growing.

1 John 3:23-24

23 This is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he commanded. 24 He who keeps his commandments remains in him, and he in him. By this we know that he remains in us, by the Spirit which he gave us.

(WEB)

These final verses gather the whole chapter into two commands and end with the promise of abiding and the Spirit’s presence. Reading them closes the session on hope and gives the group a clear summary to take home.

Memory Verse for 1 John 3

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you for the love you have lavished on us, that we should be called your children. Thank you that this identity is already ours, and that you will one day make us like your Son when we see him as he is. Search our hearts as we leave this place. Where we have spoken about love without living it, show us the next small step to take. Where our hearts condemn us, remind us that you are greater than our hearts and know all things. Give us boldness before you, and give us grace to love our brothers and sisters in deed and in truth. Help us remain in Jesus through the ordinary days ahead, and let the Spirit you have given us bear witness to your presence among us. Amen.
