This page gives you ready-to-use study questions for 1 Corinthians 14, Paul’s teaching on spiritual gifts, prophecy and tongues, and how a church gathering should be ordered. It is written for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal reflection, with each question followed by a discussion note you can use or adapt.

1 Corinthians 14 at a Glance

Paul opens by urging the Corinthians to pursue love and to desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy, because prophecy builds up the whole assembly while speaking in a tongue without interpretation mainly edifies the speaker. He uses the image of musical instruments and military trumpets to argue that clear communication matters, and he insists that anyone speaking in a tongue should pray for the ability to interpret.

From verse 26 onward, Paul gives practical rules for worship: no more than two or three speakers in a tongue, one at a time, an interpreter present, and prophets who are weighed by others. He ends by stressing that God is a God of peace and that everything should be done decently and in order.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an opinion. Ask the group to point to the actual words of the text and to resist explaining yet. Give people a minute of silent reading if the passage is new to them.

1 Corinthians 14:1

Follow after love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

(WEB)

This verse sets the tone for the whole chapter. Read it first so that the group hears that love leads the discussion of gifts, and let that frame everything that follows.

1 Corinthians 14:3

But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.

(WEB)

Paul gives a clear definition of prophecy by its effect on hearers. Reading it aloud helps the group test every later example against the same standard of building up.

1 Corinthians 14:19

However in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.

(WEB)

This verse makes plain that clear teaching matters more than impressive speech. It is a good verse to read before discussing how the group prepares its own words for others.

1 Corinthians 14:26

What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up.

(WEB)

Here Paul describes the varied life of a gathering and its single purpose. Reading it aloud helps the group picture what a shared meeting looks like when everyone is building up one another.

1 Corinthians 14:33

For God is not a God of confusion, but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.

(WEB)

This verse links the order of worship to the character of God. End the reading here, since it gives the chapter its theological anchor before the closing exhortation.

Memory Verse for 1 Corinthians 14

1 Corinthians 14:40

Let all things be done decently and in order.

(WEB)

Paul’s closing words give a simple principle that fits almost any setting. Encourage the group to memorize it as a reminder that good order and generous purpose belong together.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you thankful for the gifts you have given to your church and for the love that Paul tells us must guide every one of them. Teach us to seek what builds others up, to speak with words that can be understood, and to listen as well as we speak. Where we have been loud without meaning, make us clear, and where we have been silent out of fear, give us courage to offer what you have placed in us.

Give us a spirit of peace in our meetings and in our homes, so that everything we do reflects your character, a God who is not the author of confusion. Help us to honor one another, to be patient with the differences among us, and to hold fast to love. Amen.
