This page gives you ready-to-use study questions for 1 Chronicles 9, with a leader’s answer or discussion note for each one. It suits a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. The chapter is a list, so the questions help you move from the names and numbers to what they reveal about God’s faithfulness and about the people who served him.

1 Chronicles 9 at a Glance

The chapter opens with a summary of Israel’s genealogies, recorded in the royal annals, and a note that Judah went into exile in Babylon. It then turns to the people who first resettled their towns after the return: Israelites, priests, Levites, and temple servants, with families living in Jerusalem and the surrounding villages. Most of the chapter lists the priests, Levites, and gatekeepers and describes their duties around the house of the LORD.

Near the end the focus shifts to the genealogy of Saul, tracing his line from Jeiel down through Jonathan and his descendants. Read the chapter as a bridge: it connects the post-exile community to the story of Israel’s first king and sets up the account of Saul’s death that follows in chapter 10.

Observation Questions

Use these first to make sure everyone has the facts of the text in view before anyone offers an opinion. Ask the group to point to the verse each time, and read it aloud if the room is small enough to do so comfortably.

1 Chronicles 9:2

Now the first inhabitants who lived in their possessions in their cities were Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the temple servants.

And their brothers, heads of their fathers’ houses, one thousand seven hundred sixty; very able men for the work of the service of God’s house.

1 Chronicles 9:20

Phinehas the son of Eleazar was ruler over them in time past, and the LORD was with him.

(WEB)

This short line about Phinehas and the LORD’s presence is a good place to pause and talk about divine blessing on ordinary leadership. It rewards a moment of reflection in the session.

1 Chronicles 9:22

All these who were chosen to be gatekeepers in the thresholds were two hundred twelve. These were listed by genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer ordained in their office of trust.

(WEB)

The ordination of the gatekeepers by David and Samuel shows that God’s work is entrusted through appointed leaders. Reading it aloud helps the group see the link between faithful service and an office received from God.

1 Chronicles 9:33

These are the singers, heads of fathers’ households of the Levites, who lived in the rooms and were free from other service; for they were employed in their work day and night.

This verse describes the singers who served day and night, free from other duties. It invites the group to think about worship as a full-time offering and to consider how they set aside time for God.

Memory Verse for 1 Chronicles 9

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you for the people whose names are kept in your Word, from the gatekeepers and singers to the priests who served in your house. Teach us to value the quiet work of faithfulness in our own homes and churches, and help us to honor those who keep the doors open for others. Remind us that you are with those who serve you, as you were with Phinehas. Give each of us a willing heart and steady hands for whatever you have entrusted to us this week. Amen.
