This page gives you ready-to-use study questions for 1 Chronicles 25, the chapter where King David organizes the temple musicians into families and assigns them their duties by lot. It works well for a small group, a Sunday class or a personal quiet time. Each question comes with a leader’s note so you can guide the discussion without preparing a separate summary.

1 Chronicles 25 at a Glance

The chapter opens with David and his military leaders setting apart the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for prophetic music with harps, stringed instruments and cymbals. Verses 2 through 6 name the sons of each family and show that they served under their fathers and under the king’s direction. Verses 7 and 8 count the skilled singers and describe how duties were assigned by lot, with no one exempt because of rank or training.

Verses 9 through 31 then list the twenty-four lots in order, each with a head and his twelve relatives, so that every watch of the temple service had a set group ready to serve. Use this flow to keep your group oriented as you move from the opening appointment to the detailed rotation.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first to make sure everyone has read the text closely and can point to what it says before anyone interprets it. Ask the group to find the answer in the chapter and read the verse aloud.

The count of two hundred eighty-eight skilled singers shows that God’s service was recorded with care. Reading it aloud reminds the group that every person’s ability matters in the work of worship.

1 Chronicles 25:8

They cast lots for their offices, all alike, the small as well as the great, the teacher as well as the student.

This verse describes the casting of lots with the striking phrase that the small and the great, teacher and student, were treated alike. It is a natural place to ask how the group views status and ministry.

1 Chronicles 25:9-10

9 Now the first lot came out for Asaph to Joseph; the second to Gedaliah, he and his brothers and sons were twelve; 10 the third to Zaccur, his sons and his brothers, twelve…

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you call ordinary people into your service, from the most skilled to the newest learner. Thank you that you guided the choosing of each musician through the casting of lots, and that you ordered every part of the temple’s song. Help us to offer the gifts you have given us with humility and joy, and to trust your assignment when it surprises us. Teach us to honor those who serve faithfully in quiet, repeated roles, and to pass on what we have learned to the next generation. Keep us steady in our own turns of service, and let our lives lift up your name. Amen.
