This page gives you ready-made study questions for 1 Chronicles 24, the chapter where King David organizes the priests into twenty-four divisions so that the temple service runs in an orderly rotation. It is written for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study, and each question comes with a leader’s note so you can move from reading to discussion without preparing a separate summary.

1 Chronicles 24 at a Glance

The chapter opens with the descendants of Aaron, the priestly family. Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu died without children, so the priestly work fell to Eleazar and Ithamar. David, with the help of Zadok and Ahimelech, divides the priests between these two lines, and the lines are weighted so that Eleazar’s family receives sixteen divisions and Ithamar’s receives eight.

The rest of the chapter describes how the divisions are chosen by lot, recorded by the scribe Shemaiah in front of the king and leaders, and then followed by the Levite families who serve alongside the priests. Read the chapter with that movement in mind: order, fairness, and the rest of the household of worship.

Observation Questions

Use these first to make sure everyone has actually read the text and can point to what it says. Keep the pace brisk and let people find the answers in the passage before anyone offers commentary.

1 Chronicles 24:1-2

1 These were the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 2 But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest’s office.

Reading the opening establishes the family line and explains why the priestly work passed to Eleazar and Ithamar. It gives the whole chapter its starting point and helps the group see the continuity behind the arrangement.

1 Chronicles 24:5

Thus were they divided impartially by drawing lots; for there were princes of the sanctuary, and princes of God, both of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.

(WEB)

This verse states that the division was made impartially by lots and names the princes on both sides. It is the key statement of fairness in the chapter and worth lingering on in discussion.

1 Chronicles 24:6

Shemaiah the son of Nethanel the scribe, who was of the Levites, wrote them in the presence of the king, the princes, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the priests and of the Levites; one fathers’ house being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.

(WEB)

Here the scribe Shemaiah records the arrangement in the presence of the king and leaders. Reading it aloud reminds the group that the order was witnessed and written, which made it trustworthy to everyone involved.

1 Chronicles 24:19

This was their ordering in their service, to come into the LORD’s house according to the ordinance given to them by Aaron their father, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

(WEB)

This verse ties the whole rotation to the command given through Aaron and the LORD. It anchors the priests’ service in instruction rather than preference, a theme worth returning to in the application questions.

1 Chronicles 24:31

These likewise cast lots even as their brothers the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the priests and of the Levites; the fathers’ households of the chief even as those of his younger brother.

(WEB)

The chapter closes by placing the Levites and priests side by side under the same method of casting lots. Reading it last gives the group a sense of unity across different callings in the worship community.

Memory Verse for 1 Chronicles 24

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you care about order and faithfulness in the everyday work of serving you. Help us to serve in the places you have given us, whether visible or quiet, and to honor those who serve beside us. Teach us to receive the decisions made in fairness, and to trust that you are at work even when the outcome is not what we hoped. Give us wise hearts to keep honest records of your goodness, so that we remember what you have done. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
