This page gives you ready-to-use study questions for 1 Chronicles 10, the chapter that records the death of Saul and his sons in battle against the Philistines. It is built for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study, with observation, interpretation and application questions, leader’s notes, key verses to read aloud, a memory verse and a closing prayer.
1 Chronicles 10 at a Glance
The chapter opens on the battlefield at Mount Gilboa, where Israel’s army is routed and Saul’s sons are killed. Saul, badly wounded and under pressure from archers, asks his armor bearer to finish him off, and when the man refuses, Saul falls on his own sword. The Philistines then strip the bodies, display Saul’s armor in their temples, and send word through their land.
The final section turns to the men of Jabesh Gilead, who retrieve the bodies and give them an honorable burial. The chapter closes with a theological summary: Saul died because he broke faith with the LORD and sought counsel from a medium rather than from the LORD, and the kingdom passed to David. Use this flow to move from the story itself to the reasons the writer gives for it.
Observation Questions
Use these questions at the start of the session to make sure everyone has the facts of the chapter in view before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask each person to point to the verse that answers before discussing meaning, and let quieter members answer first.
1 Chronicles 10:1-3
1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa. 2 The Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. 3 The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was distressed by reason of the archers.

Reading the opening battle aloud sets the scene for the whole chapter and reminds the group that the story begins in real defeat, not in a moral lesson. It works well as the first passage in the session.
1 Chronicles 10:4-5
4 Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me.” But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it. 5 When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died.

This passage holds the emotional center of the chapter, and hearing it aloud lets the group feel its starkness. Give space afterward for anyone to name what they notice about Saul’s fear and the armor bearer’s response.
1 Chronicles 10:8-10
8 On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 They stripped him, and took his head and his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines all around, to carry the news to their idols, and to the people. 10 They put his armor in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the house of Dagon.

Reading how the Philistines display the defeat helps the group feel the public humiliation of Israel’s king. Use it to talk about how the enemy’s message differs from how God’s people are called to speak of their own failures.
1 Chronicles 10:11-12
11 When all Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all the valiant men arose, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
(WEB)
The honorable burial by the men of Jabesh Gilead offers a welcome turn after the grim scenes before it. Reading it aloud lets the group end the first part of the study on an act of loyalty and grief.
1 Chronicles 10:13-14
13 So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against the LORD, because of the LORD’s word, which he didn’t keep; and also because he asked counsel of one who had a familiar spirit, to inquire, 14 and didn’t inquire of the LORD. Therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
(WEB)
These final verses state the writer’s verdict on Saul and set up the transition to David. Read them last so the group hears the theological summary as the conclusion to the story they have just walked through.
Memory Verse for 1 Chronicles 10
1 Chronicles 10:14
And didn’t inquire of the LORD. Therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
(WEB)
This verse carries the chapter’s central point: Saul failed to seek the LORD, and the kingdom was given to David. Invite members to repeat it together, and suggest they keep it in mind whenever they face a decision that calls for prayerful guidance.
A Closing Prayer for the Group
Father, we come to you as people who, like Saul, are tempted to look everywhere but to you when we are afraid or uncertain. Forgive the times we have trusted our own wisdom, our fears, or the voices around us more than your word. Teach us to inquire of you first in every decision, large and small, and give us the humility to ask for help before we fall into panic or pride. Strengthen us to be faithful to one another as the men of Jabesh Gilead were faithful to Saul, honoring those who have walked with us even when they have failed. We ask all this in the name of Jesus, who sought the Father always. Amen.
