These prayers are for New Year’s Day, the morning when a new calendar page turns and many of us feel both hope and a little fear about what comes next. Pray them early in the day, before the noise of the week starts, or at the close of the day as you look back. Each one can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.
Prayers for New Year’s Day
Lord, thank you for bringing me to the first morning of another year. I did not earn this day, and I know that every breath I take is a gift from you. Some of this year already feels heavy when I look ahead: the work I am not sure how to finish, the money I worry about, the people I love who are struggling, and the habits I keep promising to change. I bring each of these to you by name, and I ask you to meet me in them.
Give me wisdom for the decisions waiting on the calendar. Help me set goals that are honest and humble, and help me hold them loosely enough to follow where you lead. Where I have failed in the past year, forgive me, and teach me to receive that forgiveness without shame. Heal the places in my heart that are still sore, and make me patient with myself as I grow. Protect the people I love, and draw us closer to one another and to you. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, this is a new year and I am already tired of thinking about all that lies ahead. Be my steady ground today. Help me take the next step in front of me and trust you with the rest. Keep my heart soft, my words kind, and my hands busy with what matters most. I give you this year one day at a time, starting now. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Pray these words on the first morning of the year, thanking God that his mercy is new each day, not just on the day you feel strong. Ask him to renew your sense of his faithfulness as the calendar turns.
Psalm 90:12
So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
(WEB)
Use this verse to ask God to teach you how to spend the days ahead wisely. Let it shape your plans for the year, so that your time is given to what lasts.
Isaiah 43:19
Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and ask God to show you the new thing he may be starting, even if you cannot yet see its shape. Pray for eyes to notice it when it appears.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Bring your plans for the year to God in prayer and ask him to direct them. Pray that you would lean on his understanding rather than your own anxious guesses about what the months will bring.
Philippians 3:13-14
13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Pray this when old regrets from last year crowd in. Ask God to help you release what is behind you and keep moving forward toward the goal he has set for you.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find that the early morning of January 1 is the best time for this prayer, while the house is quiet and before the phone fills with messages. Sit somewhere you can be still, perhaps at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands. Holding something warm can help you slow down and let the words settle before you speak them.
If you are praying with a spouse, a child, or a close friend, read the main prayer together, taking turns with each paragraph. You might also write the names of the people and concerns you mention on a piece of paper and place it somewhere you will see it through the year. Coming back to it in the coming months can remind you how God has been faithful.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this new year and walk beside you in every season. May he give you peace where worry has been living, strength for the work in front of you, and joy in the small everyday mercies. May the Lord keep you, guide you, and be gracious to you all the days of this year.
