Acts 5:16 describes a crowd from the towns around Jerusalem bringing their sick and those troubled by evil spirits to the apostles, and every one of them being healed. The verse shows God working powerfully through the early church in the first days after Jesus rose from the dead. Luke, the author of Acts, is the one describing this scene, and his readers are the early Christian community and those wanting to understand how the church began.

The multitude also came together from the cities around Jerusalem, bringing sick people, and those who were tormented by unclean spirits: and they were all healed.

What Acts 5:16 Means

The verse begins with people gathering from the cities around Jerusalem. That detail matters, because it shows the news of what God was doing had spread beyond the city walls. People did not come out of curiosity alone. They came because they believed the apostles could bring them to God’s healing power, and that expectation was met.

Luke names two kinds of need: sick bodies and people “tormented by unclean spirits.” He lists them side by side, which tells you that physical illness and spiritual oppression both fell within the reach of Jesus’ power working through his followers. The phrase “they were all healed” is strong. Luke is not saying that most were helped or that some improved. He reports a complete result.

What the verse does not promise is a rule that every prayer for healing will work the same way today. It records a particular moment in the story of the church, when God chose to confirm the apostles’ witness in a visible way. Read it as a true account of God’s power at work, not as a formula that guarantees the same outcome in every situation.

The Context of Acts 5:16

Luke wrote Acts as a sequel to his Gospel, tracing how the message about Jesus moved from Jerusalem outward into the wider world. His first readers were likely Christians who needed to see that the church was not a random movement but the work of the risen Lord continuing through ordinary people. The verses just before this one describe many believers being added to the Lord, and the apostle Peter’s shadow falling on the sick as people laid them in the streets.

The verses that follow show how the religious leaders responded with jealousy, arresting the apostles, only for an angel to open the prison doors and send them out to keep preaching. Seeing that sequence changes how Acts 5:16 reads. The healings are not isolated wonders. They sit inside a larger struggle in which God’s power vindicates the apostles even as opposition grows.

Key Phrases in Acts 5:16

Matthew 4:23

This verse describes Jesus teaching, preaching, and healing every kind of disease and sickness among the people. It shows that the healing power seen in Acts 5:16 flowed from the ministry of Jesus himself, and that the apostles were continuing his work.

Mark 16:17-18

17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new languages; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it will in no way hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Here Jesus speaks of signs that will accompany those who believe, including laying hands on the sick. Read alongside Acts 5:16, it helps you see that the church’s ministry to the sick and oppressed was part of the commission Jesus gave his followers.

A Short Prayer From Acts 5:16

Lord, you saw the crowds of people who were sick and troubled, and you did not turn them away. Thank you for the way your power reached into real suffering through the apostles and the faith of those who brought their loved ones to them. Help me to bring the needs of others to you with the same trust, and give me courage to act when I see someone in pain. Where I or those I love are carrying sickness or heaviness, be present and bring the healing and freedom that only you can give. Amen.
