This bedtime prayer is for the end of a day when you know you made a poor decision, or when you are carrying a choice you have not yet settled. It is meant for the quiet minutes before sleep, when the day’s options are still replaying in your mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put the details of your own day into your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Making Wise Choices

Father, the day is ending, and I bring you the choices I made in it. Some of them I am glad about, and some I would take back if I could. Thank you for the moments when I paused before speaking, and for the ones when I noticed a temptation and turned away from it. Forgive me for the times I rushed ahead, trusted my own feelings too quickly, or ignored the people who were trying to help me see clearly.

Tonight I hand you the decisions still ahead of me: the money I need to spend or save, the conversation I have been avoiding, the commitment I have not yet answered. I do not want to choose out of fear or from pressure to please others. Give me a calm mind and an honest heart, so that I can tell the difference between what is good and what only looks good. Help me remember that you see what I cannot see, and that you are not surprised by anything I face tomorrow. Guard my sleep, quiet my thoughts, and let me wake with a clearer sense of what to do next. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is full of decisions. Show me what is wise and give me the courage to do it. Keep me from acting in haste or in anger. Settle my heart so that I can rest, knowing you will guide me in the morning. Thank you for being with me through this day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this as a reminder that your own understanding has limits, and ask God to direct the paths you are unsure about, especially the ones that feel urgent at night.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you lie awake wondering what to do, bring this verse back to God as a request. Ask him plainly for wisdom and trust that he is willing to give it.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Let this verse light the next step rather than the whole road. Pray that God’s word will show you enough to take one faithful action tomorrow.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse to lay down the day’s worries. Pray that God would make you safe and still, so that your rest is not interrupted by unfinished decisions.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the renewing of your mind. Ask God to shape your habits of thought so that good choices come more naturally over time.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this in the last few minutes before you turn off the light, sitting on the edge of the bed or lying still with your hands open on the blanket. If you keep a notebook, write down the one decision that weighs on you most, then read the prayer while looking at it. Some people find it helpful to place a hand on the notebook or on their chest as they pray, a small physical reminder that they are handing the burden over.

If you share your home with someone, consider praying this together, or asking a spouse, friend or family member to pray it over you once a week. Another person can notice patterns you have missed and remind you of God’s faithfulness when your own thoughts run in circles. Whatever you do, return to the prayer on nights when the decisions feel heavy, and let it be a steady rhythm rather than a one-time request.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you a quiet heart and a clear mind tonight. May he steady your steps tomorrow and show you the next faithful thing to do. May you sleep without fear, knowing you are held by one who sees the whole road.
