This bedtime prayer for restful sleep is written for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and your mind will not switch off. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, kneeling by the bed or sitting on the edge of it with the lamp still on. You can also use it as a starting point, changing the names and details to fit your own evening and the people you carry in your heart.

Bedtime Prayer for Restful Sleep

Lord, the day is ending and I bring it to You as it is. I bring the conversations that went badly, the deadline I did not meet, and the tiredness that settled into my shoulders around midday. Take them from my hands. I do not need to carry them into the night, because You have already carried far heavier things than these.

Quiet my thoughts now. When my mind starts replaying the worries about money, work, my health, or the people I love who are far away, remind me that You are awake and watching over all of it. Let my body loosen and my breathing slow. Settle the restless part of me that keeps checking the clock and rehearsing tomorrow. Give me the kind of sleep that comes from trusting You, not from trying harder.

Watch over my home tonight. Guard the people sleeping under this roof, and keep watch over those who are awake with fear, pain, or grief. Let the night be a place of rest and not of dread. Thank You for the bed, the quiet, and the gift of another day behind me. Whatever morning brings, I am Yours in the dark as much as in the light. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and my mind is still busy. I hand You the day and everything in it that I could not finish or fix. Be near me in the dark. Calm the worries that keep me awake, and give me rest for my body and my heart. Keep my family safe through the night, and wake us gently to a new morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you close your eyes. Pray it as a statement of trust: that you can lie down because God is the one keeping watch, not you. Let the words replace the list of unfinished tasks with the simple fact of His protection.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse names the anxious striving that steals sleep from so many people. Pray it honestly, confessing the habit of working through the night in your head. Ask God to teach you to rest as an act of faith rather than as a reward for finishing.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to Him, and bedtime is often when weariness is most honest. Bring Him the specific burdens on your mind tonight, naming each one. Then pray that you would leave them with Him rather than picking them back up in the dark.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Peace in this verse is tied to a mind that is fixed on God. Use it when your thoughts are racing, gently turning your attention back to Him each time it wanders. Ask Him to keep your mind steady as your body prepares for sleep.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses speak of mercies that are new each morning, which can be a comfort when the night has been hard. Pray them as you close your day, thanking God that tomorrow’s grace is already prepared. It lets you release today’s failures without holding onto them until dawn.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time about fifteen minutes before you plan to sleep, after screens are off and the lights are dimmed. Sit somewhere comfortable, perhaps on the edge of your bed or in a chair near the window, and hold something in your hands that helps you settle, such as a smooth stone, a warm mug, or the blanket you will be pulling up soon. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to notice whether your body is beginning to soften.

If you share a bed or a home, invite your partner, a child, or a housemate to pray the prayer with you, taking turns with the sentences. You can also ask a friend or family member to pray it for you on nights when you feel especially unsettled. Keep a short list beside the bed of people you want to name, so that when the prayer reaches “those who are awake with fear,” you have someone specific in mind.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never slumbers keep watch over you tonight. May your worries grow quiet and your breathing grow slow, and may you wake to find that you were held all through the dark. Rest well, and receive the peace that God gives to His beloved children.
