This bedtime prayer is for the discouraged, for the person who lies down at night still carrying a heavy day or a heavy heart. Pray it in the last few minutes before sleep, once the lights are low and the phone is set aside. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak the words that rise in your own mind.

Bedtime Prayer for the Discouraged

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day tired in a way sleep alone may not fix. Some things went wrong that I could not control, and some hopes I had for today quietly fell apart. I have replayed conversations, counted my failures, and wondered whether I am making any progress at all. Tonight I set those thoughts down in your presence, because I cannot carry them all the way into the night.

Thank you that you see what I cannot see from where I stand. You know the worry that keeps me awake, the disappointment I have not told anyone about, and the quiet fear that things will not get better. Lift the weight from my shoulders and steady my breathing. Where discouragement has settled into my thoughts like dust, let your truth settle there instead. Remind me that you are near, that you have not stepped back from me, and that my worth does not rise or fall with how this day went.

Guard my sleep and watch over my family, my home and the people I love while I rest. Give me a deeper rest than my body can take by itself, and wake me tomorrow with a little more courage than I have tonight. I trust you with what is unfinished, with what I got wrong, and with what I still do not understand. Thank you for your faithfulness, which does not wait for my mood to improve. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am discouraged tonight and I do not have the words for all of it. You know what is weighing on me, so I give it to you now. Quiet my fearful thoughts, forgive what I did wrong today, and remind me that you are with me in the dark. Let me rest in your care until morning, and give me strength for whatever comes next. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 42:11

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks to his own downcast soul and then turns it toward hope. Pray this verse by naming the discouragement out loud, then telling yourself, in God’s presence, where your hope is placed tonight.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

These verses describe a God who is near in trouble, not distant from it. Pray them slowly, pausing after each phrase to picture the steadiness they describe, and ask God to make that steadiness real to you before you sleep.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him. Pray this as a direct answer to your own exhaustion, bringing him the specific burdens you have carried all day and leaving them with him.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God giving strength to the faint and power to the weak. Pray it honestly about where you feel depleted, asking God to supply what your own reserves can no longer provide.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Paul lists the things that cannot separate us from God’s love. Pray this passage by naming the discouragement itself among those things and affirming that it has no power to cut you off from him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a consistent spot for this prayer, such as the edge of your bed with a lamp on, or a chair by the window if you cannot sleep. Before you begin, place a hand on your chest and take three slow breaths, so your body knows the day is ending. Some people find it helpful to hold a small object, like a smooth stone or a folded note, and to open their hand in a gesture of release as they say the words about setting their burdens down.

If you share a home, consider praying this prayer with a spouse, a roommate or a child who is also struggling. You might read it together, taking turns with the paragraphs, or simply pray the shorter version aloud for one another. If no one is near, you can still pray it alone, and you may find it helps to write the names of the people or situations you are releasing on a piece of paper and place it under your pillow.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep watch over you tonight and give you rest that reaches deeper than your tired body. May he steady your thoughts, quiet your fears, and remind you that you are his. Whatever tomorrow holds, may you wake knowing that the God who held you through this day is already present in the morning.
