This bedtime prayer is for anyone sleeping away from home, whether you are in a dormitory, a hospital bed, a hotel room, a deployment base, or a spare room at a relative’s house. Pray it at the end of the day, once the lights are low and you are ready to rest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own details in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Those Away From Home

Lord, the day is ending, and I am lying down in a place that does not quite feel like mine. The bed is unfamiliar, the sounds in the hallway are new, and the quiet has a different weight than the quiet at home. I thank you for getting me here safely. I thank you for the people who helped me along the way, and for the small kindnesses of the day that I almost missed. Now I bring you what I carried in my chest all day: the homesickness, the worry about the people I left behind, and the tiredness of doing everything in a new place.

Father, take the weight of tomorrow off my mind. I do not need to know how every conversation will go or how long this season will last. Keep the people I love in your care while I am gone, and let them feel your nearness even when I cannot be there. Watch over my body while I sleep, my thoughts as they wander, and every door and window in this room. Let me wake rested, with enough courage for what the morning asks of me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and far from the people I love. Hold them while I am away, and hold me too. Quiet the thoughts that keep me awake and remind me that I am not alone in this room. Watch over my sleep tonight and bring me home again in your time. Let me rest in the knowledge that you are awake even when I am not. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the strangeness of the room makes sleep hard to find. Ask God to give you the peace that lets your body settle, trusting that he keeps watch while you are unconscious and unable to keep watch yourself.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you feel exposed or uneasy in a place you do not know. Thank God that he does not doze off on the job, and ask him to guard you through the hours of darkness while you rest.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

Use this when you feel far from home. Remind yourself that no distance puts you beyond God’s reach, and ask him to lead you and hold you in whatever place you wake up tomorrow.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when your mind keeps racing through worries about family or work. Ask him to fix your thoughts on him, so that your heart can stop circling the same anxious questions.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are worn out from travel, adjustment, or missing someone. Accept Jesus’ invitation to bring your exhaustion to him, and let the words sink in as you drift toward sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment, such as after you brush your teeth or once you have turned off the light, so the prayer becomes a habit in an unfamiliar place. Sit on the edge of the bed or lie still with your hands open on the blanket. If you have a photo of home, a written note, or a worn object from your house, hold it while you pray and let it remind you of the people you are naming.

If you share the room or the building with others, you can pray it silently, or ask a roommate, a parent on the phone, or a friend back home to pray it with you at the same hour. Many people find that a short phone call with someone who prays for them makes the first night in a new place much lighter.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you through this night in a place that is not yet home. May he guard your going out and your coming in, and may his peace settle over you like a blanket. May the ones who love you feel his nearness too, and may you wake refreshed and ready for the day ahead.
