This list gives you Bible passages about comfort, arranged by the kinds of hard moments people actually face: grief, fear, exhaustion and the long quiet stretches when prayer feels thin. It is written for anyone who wants to read a verse that fits their situation rather than scroll through a long concordance. Taken together, these passages share one conviction: God does not only feel distant from suffering, he moves toward it, and his comfort is meant to be received and passed on.

Verses for Grief and Loss

Grief rarely arrives on schedule, and it often shows up in ordinary places like the grocery store or a song on the radio. The passages below speak to the heavy ache of losing someone or something that mattered deeply.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse says the Lord stays close to people whose hearts are broken. When the house feels too quiet in the evening, pause and name the one you miss, then tell God plainly that you are hurting.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Jesus pronounces a blessing on those who mourn and promises that they will be comforted. Give yourself permission to grieve without rushing it. Let mourning be a real part of your week rather than something to hide.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Paul describes God as the source of every comfort, and says that comfort is meant to flow outward. Think of one person who has walked through something similar and consider reaching out to them this week.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

This passage looks ahead to a day when tears are wiped away and death is no more. Read it slowly on the hard days, letting the promise of an end to sorrow give your present pain a horizon.

Verses for Fear and Anxiety

Fear tends to speak in the middle of the night, when the mind runs through every worst case. These verses offer a steadier voice and a place to set down what you cannot carry alone.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God tells his people not to fear because he is with them and will strengthen them. When anxiety spikes, repeat the first clause slowly and then breathe it out as a short prayer.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from anxiety to prayer, pointing toward a peace that is larger than understanding. Write your worries on a card, pray over each one, and then leave the card where you can see it as a reminder that you have handed them over.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

The psalmist admits fear and then chooses to trust. You do not need to pretend you feel brave. Speak the verse out loud in the car or at the sink, admitting the fear while placing your trust in God.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Jesus contrasts the peace he gives with the peace the world offers, and tells his disciples not to let their hearts be troubled. Notice where your mind goes when it is restless, and invite Jesus into that exact place.

Verses for Weariness and Discouragement

Some days the problem is not sorrow or fear but plain exhaustion, the feeling that you have given more than you have. These passages address the kind of tiredness that sleep does not fix.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him for rest. At the end of a long day, name the specific burden you are carrying, then imagine setting it down in his presence for a few minutes.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah says God gives strength to the faint and renews the strength of those who wait on him. Choose one small thing you can do today that depends on his strength rather than your own.

Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

(WEB)

The psalmist admits that his body and heart may fail, yet God remains his strength. When you feel spent, let this verse remind you that your worth and endurance do not rest only on your own reserves.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good, promising a harvest in due time. Pick one faithful habit, such as a kind text or a daily prayer, and keep it going even when it feels unseen.

Verses for Quiet Moments of Trust

Comfort is not only for crisis. These verses suit the ordinary mornings and evenings when you simply want to be reminded that you are held.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

David speaks of walking through the darkest valley and not fearing evil, because the Lord is with him. Read this on the drive home from a difficult appointment, letting the image of a companion on the road steady you.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Paul lists the things that cannot separate believers from God’s love. Go through the list slowly and name the fear that most often tries to pull you away from that love.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

In the middle of national ruin, the writer remembers that God’s mercies are new every morning. Use this as your first thought when you wake, before the day’s demands arrive.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

God is described as a refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. When the news or your inbox feels overwhelming, return to this verse and let its steady picture of shelter settle you.

Isaiah 66:13

As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you. You will be comforted in Jerusalem.”

(WEB)

God compares his comfort to a mother comforting her child. Sit quietly with this image, letting yourself receive comfort as a child receives it, without having to earn it.

How to Use These Verses

Write a few of these verses on index cards or in the notes app on your phone, and keep them where you will see them during the day: on the bathroom mirror, in your wallet, or at the top of your planner. Repetition works better than volume, so choose three or four that fit your current season and let them return to you often.

Read them aloud when you pray, not only silently. Start with the verse, pause, and then speak a short response back to God in your own words. Many people find that a verse read in the morning and revisited at night gives their prayers a shape on days when they cannot find the words.

A Short Prayer for Comfort

Lord, you know the places in me that feel tender and tired today. Meet me in them and let your nearness be more real to me than my fear or sorrow. Help me to receive your comfort without rushing past it, and show me one person I can encourage with the same care you have shown me. Steady my heart when it runs ahead of me, and remind me that you are faithful in every season. Thank you for staying close. Amen.
