This list gives you Bible passages about helping others, gathered for anyone who wants to serve a neighbor, a friend, a stranger or a family member with a generous heart. Scripture treats helping as an act of worship, not a favor we grudgingly perform, and the passages below share that conviction. Each one points to God’s own care for the vulnerable and calls believers to reflect it in ordinary, practical ways.

Verses for Noticing the Person Who Needs Help

Before you can help someone, you have to see them. The first group of verses calls us to look beyond our own schedules and notice the people God places across our path, especially those who are easy to overlook.

Proverbs 14:31

He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.

(WEB)

This verse ties kindness to the poor directly to honoring God. When you notice someone struggling, treat that moment as an act of worship. Today, pause before you pass by a coworker who looks worn out and ask one honest question.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to carry one another’s heavy loads. Helping is not a single gesture but a shared burden. This week, choose one burden a friend has mentioned and offer to carry a small piece of it, such as a meal or a ride.

Luke 10:33-34

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, 34 came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

(WEB)

Jesus tells of a traveler who stopped when others walked on. The Samaritan noticed, felt compassion and acted. Make a habit of asking yourself, when you see a need, whether you are willing to stop rather than simply feel sorry.

Verses for Serving Quietly and Without Recognition

Much of real help happens out of sight. These passages speak to the motive behind our service, reminding us that God sees what others never will and that faithful, unnoticed kindness matters to him.

Matthew 6:3-4

3 But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does, 4 so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

(WEB)

Jesus teaches that giving should be done in secret, so that the Father who sees in secret rewards it. If you tend to want credit, try one act of help this week that no one else will hear about, and leave it there.

Colossians 3:23-24

23 And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

(WEB)

Paul encourages us to work as if serving the Lord himself. Whether you are cooking for a sick neighbor or sorting donations at church, approach the task as unto God. Let that change the quality of your effort, not only its visibility.

1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

(WEB)

Peter reminds us that each believer has received a gift to use for others. You do not need to be the most gifted person in the room. Ask yourself which small ability you have, such as listening or organizing, and offer it to someone this week.

Verses for Giving and Sharing What You Have

Helping often involves resources: time, money, food, or simply a spare room. These verses speak to generosity, and they encourage us to hold what we have with open hands rather than tight fists.

Acts 20:35

In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

(WEB)

Paul quotes Jesus saying that giving brings more blessing than receiving. This can feel counterintuitive when money is tight. Look for something small you can share, such as a bag of groceries, and notice how giving shapes your own heart.

2 Corinthians 9:7

Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart; not grudgingly, or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.

(WEB)

God loves a cheerful giver, Paul writes, and the emphasis falls on the heart behind the gift. Before you help, check your attitude. If resentment creeps in, pause, pray, and give from a place of gratitude instead.

1 John 3:17-18

17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him? 18 My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.

(WEB)

John insists that love must be shown in action, not only in words. If you have a need in front of you and the means to meet it, let your love be real. Choose one concrete action this week rather than only saying you will pray for someone.

Verses for Encouraging Others Along the Way

Sometimes the help people need most is encouragement, a word spoken at the right moment. These verses show how our speech and presence can build others up as they walk through difficulty.

Hebrews 10:24

Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works…

(WEB)

The writer urges believers to consider how to spur one another toward love and good works. Think of one person who needs a push, and send a short message today that names a specific strength you have noticed in them.

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.

(WEB)

Paul instructs us to speak only what is helpful for building others up. Before you respond to a friend in frustration, ask whether your words will help them. Then choose the response that does.

1 Thessalonians 5:14

We exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the faint-hearted, support the weak, be patient toward all.

(WEB)

This verse asks believers to encourage the timid, help the weak and be patient with everyone. These three responses fit different people. Identify who in your life is discouraged, and decide which of the three they most need from you.

Matthew 25:35-36

35 For I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in. 36 I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’

(WEB)

Jesus describes caring for the hungry, the stranger, the sick and the prisoner as caring for him. This passage makes practical service a direct expression of faith. Consider which of these needs is nearest to you and take one step toward it.

Romans 12:13

Contributing to the needs of the saints; given to hospitality.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to share with the needs of God’s people and to pursue hospitality. Hospitality can be as simple as opening your table. Invite someone who is alone to share a meal this week.

How to Use These Verses

Write one or two of these verses on a card and place it where you will see it during a busy day, such as the kitchen counter or the dashboard of your car. Reading a single verse slowly each morning will do more than skimming the whole list once. When a specific need comes to mind, return to the passage that speaks to it and let it guide what you do next.

You may also find it helpful to pray these verses back to God. Read a passage aloud, then ask the Lord to show you one person to serve and one way to serve them. Keep a short note of what you attempt and what you learn, so you can see how God is shaping your willingness to help over time.

A Short Prayer for Helping Others

Lord, you have helped us long before we ever thought to help anyone else. Open my eyes to the people around me who are carrying heavy loads. Soften my heart when I am tempted to walk past a need, and keep my motives pure, so that I serve for your glory rather than my own recognition. Give me wisdom to know how to help, and courage to act when the way is unclear. Use my time, my hands and my words for the good of those you put in my path. Amen.
