This list gives you Bible passages to read when you are facing a choice and need wisdom about making decisions, whether the choice is large, like a career change or a move, or small, like how to spend a Saturday. The verses below come from both the Old and New Testaments. What they share is a conviction that God gives wisdom to people who ask for it, and that the work of deciding is done with prayer, honesty and trust.

Verses for Asking God for Wisdom

Before you weigh the options, it helps to remember where wisdom comes from. These passages point you to God as the giver of understanding, and they invite you to ask plainly rather than trying to solve everything on your own.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James speaks to anyone who lacks clarity, and he says the answer is simply to ask. Before your next decision, write one honest sentence to God describing what you do not know, then keep that sentence where you will see it during the day.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

These verses warn against leaning only on your own understanding, which is tempting when a choice feels urgent. Try naming one assumption you are relying on and placing it before God to test it.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

This verse presents God as a teacher who guides with his eye rather than forcing the way. When you feel stuck, sit quietly for two minutes and listen before you reach for your phone or your list of pros and cons.

Verses for Weighing Options Carefully

Scripture does not treat decision-making as a matter of luck or mood. These passages encourage patience, counsel and careful thought, and they recognize that a wise choice usually comes after time spent with the facts and with trusted people.

Proverbs 15:22

Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established.

(WEB)

This proverb values advice from others, which can feel slow but often saves you from blind spots. Choose one person whose judgment you trust and ask them to tell you the risk they see in your plan.

Proverbs 16:9

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

(WEB)

Here the planning is real, but the outcome rests with God. Write down your plan for the choice, then add a line acknowledging that the Lord may direct your steps in a different way.

Luke 14:28

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?

(WEB)

Jesus uses the image of a builder counting the cost before starting a tower. Before committing to a decision, list the real costs in time, money and relationships, so your yes is made with open eyes.

Proverbs 11:14

Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory.

(WEB)

Proverbs links safety with many counselors, which is a reminder not to decide in isolation. Set a date within the next week to talk the choice through with someone who knows you well.

Verses for Trusting God With the Outcome

Even a careful decision can turn out differently than you hoped. These passages speak to the anxiety that comes after choosing, reminding you that your steadiness rests in God’s faithfulness rather than in having predicted every result.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

This verse links the work of your hands with the act of committing it to the Lord. Each morning this week, give your plans to God in a short prayer before you start the day’s tasks.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Isaiah promises a voice behind you saying which way to go, a picture of steady guidance over time. When you are unsure which road to take, pay attention to the small nudges of conscience and peace that come as you move forward.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from anxious thoughts to prayer and thanksgiving, promising a peace that guards the heart. When worry about a decision keeps returning, bring it to God in prayer and name one thing you are grateful for in the same breath.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

This verse does not say every choice will feel good, but it affirms that God works within all things for good for those who love him. After you decide, revisit this verse whenever doubt returns, and ask God to show you where he is already at work.

Verses for Discerning God’s Will

Many people want to know not only what is wise but what is faithful. These passages invite you to offer your desires to God and to remain open to his purposes, which often become clearer through obedience and time.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Paul ties discernment to a renewed mind that is shaped by God rather than by the pressures of the world. Ask yourself whether your options are shaped mainly by fear, pride or approval, and gently set those motives aside.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sums up what the Lord asks in simple terms: act justly, love mercy and walk humbly. Test each option against these three words, and notice which one leaves you more able to do the right thing for others.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

(WEB)

Paul asks that the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, which is a helpful test when you are torn between two good options. Pay attention to whether a choice brings a settled quiet or an ongoing unrest, and give that signal weight.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

This psalm invites you to commit your way to the Lord and trust him to act. Write your decision on a card, then place it on the table as a symbol of handing the matter to God rather than carrying it alone.

Proverbs 19:21

There are many plans in a man’s heart, but the LORD’s counsel will prevail.

(WEB)

Many plans come to mind, but the purpose of the Lord stands in the end. Let this verse loosen your grip on needing one perfect path, and watch for the ways God is steering you as you take faithful steps.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that match your current decision and write them on a card or in a notes app. Keep the card where you will see it at the moment you usually make choices, such as at your desk, in the car or beside your coffee maker, so the words meet you when they are needed.

Read the verses slowly, one at a time, and then pray them back to God in your own words. Ask him to shape your thinking, and when you finally decide, thank him for the wisdom he has given, even before you know how things will turn out.

A Short Prayer for making decisions

Lord, you see the choice in front of me more clearly than I do. I confess that I want certainty, and I often lean on my own sense of what is best. Give me the humility to ask for your wisdom, the patience to weigh my options well, and the courage to act once I know what is right. Quiet my fear, and help me trust that you are faithful even when the outcome is unclear. Guide my steps, and let my decision reflect your love and your justice. Amen.
