If you are about to start a new job, this list gives you Bible passages to read before your first day, during the long wait for a start date, and in the quiet hours when the nerves get loud. It is written for anyone stepping into an unfamiliar role, workplace or team. These verses share a common thread: they remind you that you do not walk into the unknown alone, and that God’s faithfulness reaches into your work as much as your prayers.

Verses for the Night Before You Start

The evening before a first day often brings a flood of questions about what you will be asked, whether you will remember names, and whether you belong there at all. These passages steer your thoughts away from performance and back toward the One who goes before you.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua was about to lead a people into territory he had never seen, and God’s answer was not a plan but a presence. Before you set your alarm, say the words “the Lord your God is with you” out loud, then lay out your clothes and bag so the morning asks less of you.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This psalm speaks of God guarding your going out and your coming in, which is exactly what a first day is. Picture the commute as one of those movements, and pray for your steps out the door and your steps home again.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God’s command not to fear comes with three promises: his presence, his strength, and his help. When the parking lot feels intimidating, repeat the verse slowly and notice which of the three promises you need most that morning.

Verses for Trusting God With the Unknown

A new role means you cannot yet see how the pieces fit together. These verses encourage you to trust God with the parts you cannot predict, including the manager you have not met and the work you have not yet learned.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Proverbs asks you not to lean on your own understanding, which is hard when you have no understanding of the new place yet. Each time you feel the urge to decide everything in advance, turn it into a short prayer asking God to make your path straight.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

The psalmist tells us to commit our way to the Lord and trust him to act. Write your job title and start date on a card, then write “commit” beside them as a reminder to hand the outcome over rather than rehearse every scenario.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses were written in a time of loss, yet they affirm that God’s mercies are new each morning. Read them when you wake up in the first week, and let the newness of each day remind you that yesterday’s stumbles do not define today.

Verses for Working With Wisdom and Integrity

Starting a job is also a chance to set the tone for how you will work. These passages help you think about honesty, diligence and the way you treat the people around you from the very beginning.

Colossians 3:23-24

23 And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

(WEB)

Paul tells us to work heartily, as for the Lord and not merely for people. Before your first meeting, name one task you want to do well that day, and do it as an offering rather than as a performance for your new boss.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

This proverb links the work of your hands with the plans of your heart. Before you begin, write down what you hope your work will look like six months from now, then commit that list to God in prayer.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you feel out of your depth, James invites you to ask God for wisdom, and promises he gives generously. Keep a note on your phone of the questions you want to bring to prayer during your first weeks, and revisit it at lunch.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.

(WEB)

The Teacher urges us to do whatever our hands find to do with all our strength. A new job can feel like a blank slate, so use this verse as a daily prompt to give your best effort to the next small task in front of you.

Verses for Peace on the Path Ahead

Even after the first day, the transition can stretch for weeks. These passages return you to peace, rest and the steady love of God.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul pairs anxiety with prayer and promises a peace that guards the heart and mind. When worry about the new role rises, speak your specific concerns to God, then consciously thank him for one thing about the job you already appreciate.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him and find rest. At the end of a long first week, sit quietly for a few minutes before you do anything else, and bring him the exhaustion you have been carrying.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Be still and know that God is God, a reminder that he holds the world together even when your calendar is packed. Try taking a minute of silence between meetings, breathing slowly and letting this line settle your pace.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Paul affirms that God works all things together for good for those who love him. Hold on to this verse as you learn the new role, trusting that God is at work in the lessons, the setbacks and the relationships you did not expect.

How to Use These Verses

Write your favorite three or four references on an index card and keep it in your bag, your wallet or the notes app on your phone. Reading them while you wait for the train or sit in the car before going inside turns spare minutes into moments of grounding. Many people also find it helpful to copy one verse onto a sticky note for their desk so they see it when the inbox fills up.

Pray the verses rather than only reading them. Begin with a line from the passage, then speak your own honest words about what you are facing that day. Revisit the same passage on the first morning, after the first week and after your first difficult conversation, and notice how your prayers change as the job becomes more familiar.

A Short Prayer for Before a New Job

Lord, you know the beginning of this work before I do. I come to you with excitement and with fear, and I ask you to hold both. Go before me into the unfamiliar rooms, the new names and the tasks I do not yet understand. Give me wisdom to ask good questions, humility to learn, and steady courage when I make mistakes. Help me to work as unto you, with honesty and care for the people around me. Let my first day be marked less by my anxiety and more by your faithfulness. Amen.
