This page gives you Bible passages to read, pray and carry with you during a life transition, whether you are moving to a new city, starting a new job, facing the end of a marriage, adjusting to retirement or grieving a season that has closed. Each passage below is paired with a short reflection and one practical way to hold it through your day. The verses share a common thread: God is steady when your circumstances are not, and he goes before you into unfamiliar ground.

Verses for the Uncertainty of Not Knowing What Comes Next

Transitions often arrive without a map. These passages speak to the unease of standing between one season and the next, when the future is blurry and the old certainties have already slipped away.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you cannot see the road, this passage asks you to stop leaning on your own reading of events. Try naming one decision you keep trying to control, and write it on a card with the words “trust the Lord with this” beneath it.

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God says he is doing something new even when you cannot yet perceive it. Each morning this week, look for one small sign that something is shifting, such as a conversation, an open door or a quiet insight, and thank God for it.

Psalm 23:1-4

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

The image of walking through a dark valley fits a season of transition closely. When you feel anxious, repeat the phrase “you are with me” slowly, letting each breath carry it.

Verses for Facing Change You Did Not Choose

Some transitions are imposed by layoffs, illness, separation or loss. The passages in this group speak honestly to pain and disorientation while holding on to God’s faithfulness.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse says the Lord draws near to the brokenhearted, which means you do not have to pretend to be fine. Tonight, tell God one honest sentence about how you feel, without trying to edit it into something more acceptable.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Written by someone whose world had collapsed, these words insist that God’s mercy is renewed each morning. Use this passage as your first prayer when you wake, asking for the mercy of that day specifically.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Paul learned that God’s grace is enough even in weakness, which is often where a sudden change leaves us. Name one area where you feel least capable right now, and ask God to supply the strength you lack.

Verses for Stepping Into a New Beginning

Once you have left something behind, the question becomes how to begin well. These verses encourage courage, purpose and a settled sense of who you are in God’s sight.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua was commissioned to lead Israel into territory no one had mapped, and the command to be strong and courageous was given before the crossing. Before your first day in a new role or place, read this aloud and remind yourself that the same presence goes with you.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes about forgetting what lies behind and pressing toward what lies ahead, which can release you from replaying the past. Choose one forward step this week, however small, and take it without waiting for every feeling to catch up.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

This verse does not say every change is good, but it does say God is working within what happens to you. When a memory of loss returns, pause and ask God to show you one way he is at work in the present situation.

Verses for Trusting God Through Each Day of the Transition

Transitions unfold over weeks and months, not in a single moment. These passages support steady, ordinary faithfulness as the days accumulate.

Lamentations 3:24

“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.”

(WEB)

Here the speaker chooses to hope in the Lord, a decision rather than a feeling. At the end of each day, name one thing you are choosing to hope for, even if it seems modest.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus reminds his listeners that each day has enough trouble of its own, which frees you from carrying next month’s worries today. When your mind races ahead, bring your attention back to the task in front of you right now.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

The psalmist lifts his eyes to the hills and remembers where his help comes from. When you feel overwhelmed, look up from your phone or your to-do list and speak these words toward the sky or the window.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God promises to strengthen and uphold his people, and the repetition of “I am with you” makes the promise easy to remember. Write this verse on the inside of your planner or notebook so it meets you each time you plan the next step.

Hebrews 13:5

Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”

(WEB)

The reminder that God will never leave or forsake you speaks directly to the fear of being left alone in new surroundings. Read it before you enter a room where you know no one yet, and let it steady your first conversation.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three passages that speak most directly to your situation rather than trying to absorb all fifteen at once. Write them on index cards and keep one in your wallet, one by your bed and one where you work or study, so they appear at the moments you need them.

Pray the verses back to God instead of only reading them. Turn “I will not be shaken” into “Lord, help me not to be shaken today,” and let the words shape the shape of your requests. Returning to the same passage over several weeks will often reveal something new as your circumstances change.

A Short Prayer for a Life Transition

Lord, you know the road I am on, and you know the parts of it I cannot see. I bring you what I am leaving behind and what I am stepping toward, and I ask you to go before me into each unfamiliar place. Give me the courage to take the next honest step, and the patience to wait when the way is unclear. Where I am grieving, meet me with your mercy, and where I am hopeful, keep my hope anchored in you. Help me to rest in your faithfulness today. Amen.
