When life is hard, you need Scripture that meets you where you actually are: in a waiting room, at a kitchen table after a bad phone call, or lying awake at three in the morning. This list gathers passages that speak to exhaustion, fear, grief and the long stretch of trying to keep going. These verses share one thread: God is near to people in trouble, and He does not leave them to face it alone.

Verses for Fear and Anxiety

Fear tends to narrow your focus until every worry feels enormous. The passages below widen the view by turning your attention toward God’s presence and care, which is where the Bible repeatedly sends people who are afraid.

Psalm 46:1-3

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3 though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.

The psalmist describes a world shaking apart, and still he speaks of God as a refuge close at hand. Try reading this slowly when news or a diagnosis leaves you feeling unsteady, and name one concrete thing God is to you that day.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer rather than with self-reliance. When a worry starts looping in your mind, turn it into a short, specific request to God, and then notice the moment you set it down.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to the fearful here, promising strength and help. Write this verse on a card for your wallet or your bathroom mirror, and read it aloud before you walk into the thing you dread.

Verses for Pain, Loss and Grief

Grief does not follow a schedule, and it does not always come with words. These passages give language to sorrow and assure you that God draws close to people whose hearts are broken.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted, which is a statement about His nearness, not about how quickly your pain will end. On days when you cannot pray well, simply tell Him where it hurts and let that be enough.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Jesus names mourning as a place of blessing and comfort. Let this verse permit you to grieve honestly rather than hurrying past the loss, and consider sharing it with someone who is also grieving.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Paul describes God as the source of every comfort, and he links that comfort to the way we later pass it on. Think of one person who is struggling now and ask God whether you could offer them a little of what you have received.

Verses for Weariness and Waiting

Some hard seasons are not dramatic. They are long, flat and tiring, and the difficulty is simply that you keep going when you are depleted. These verses speak to the slow work of endurance and the strength that God supplies when yours runs low.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah says God gives power to the faint and renews those who wait on Him. When your energy is gone, spend a few minutes each morning waiting before God rather than trying to produce strength on your own.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good, reminding them that a harvest will come in its time. Use this verse on the days when your efforts feel invisible, and jot down one small faithful act you completed.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Paul speaks of God working through all things for good for those who love Him, which is a promise about God’s purposes rather than a promise that everything will feel good. Hold it loosely as a truth to rest in when you cannot yet see how the story ends.

Verses for Trusting God in Uncertainty

When the path ahead is unclear, the Bible invites you to lean on God’s character rather than on your own understanding. These passages point you toward the faithfulness of the One who holds the future.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

This proverb warns against trusting only in your own understanding and encourages you to acknowledge God in all your ways. Before the next decision, pause and ask Him to direct your steps, then take the next step you can see.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Written in the middle of ruin, this passage insists that God’s mercies are new every morning. Read it when yesterday felt impossible, and let the fresh start of today be a small evidence of His faithfulness.

Psalm 27:13-14

13 I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

David expresses confidence that he will see the goodness of the Lord, and then urges patience. Pair this with a practical act of waiting, such as a daily walk, so that your hope has a regular place in your routine.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three passages that match your current season rather than trying to memorize the whole list at once. Write them on index cards, a note on your phone or the inside cover of your Bible, and place them where you will meet them during the day, such as beside the coffee maker or on the dashboard.

Read them slowly, ideally aloud, and then turn each one into a short prayer in your own words. When a verse touches a specific worry, name that worry to God directly. Returning to the same passage for several weeks often reveals new meaning as your circumstances shift.

A Short Prayer for When Life Is Hard

Lord, you see the weight I am carrying today, and you know the things I cannot put into words. I bring you my fear, my tiredness and the parts of my life that feel out of my control. Hold me steady when my thoughts race, and remind me that you are close to the brokenhearted. Give me enough strength for this hour, and trust for the one after it. Thank you that I am not facing this alone. Amen.
