This list gives you Bible verses about comfort, grouped by the situations where people most often need them: sorrow, fear, exhaustion and the long quiet hours of waiting. It is written for Christians who want Scripture they can read, remember and return to when life feels heavy. Almost every passage here points to the same truth: God is near to the hurting, and his comfort is not a feeling we manufacture but a presence we receive.

Verses for Grief and Loss

Grief has a way of making ordinary days feel strange. The verses in this group speak to the ache of losing someone or something that mattered, and they remind you that God does not stand at a distance while you mourn.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse describes God as close to the brokenhearted, not as someone who waits for you to recover first. When you feel the heaviness of a loss, try saying the phrase “near to the brokenhearted” aloud as you drive or walk, letting it name what you are actually feeling.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Jesus pronounces a blessing on those who mourn, which means grief is not something you have to hide from God. Consider writing down one specific thing you miss about the person or season you have lost, and bring that note to God in prayer.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Paul calls God the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, and he says that comfort is meant to flow outward to others. Think of one person who is grieving right now and send them a simple message this week, passing along the comfort you have received.

Verses for Fear and Anxiety

Fear tends to arrive at night, or in the minute before a phone call, or in the middle of a sleepless hour. These verses answer that fear with assurance rather than argument, pointing to a God who is actively present in the moment.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to fear here and promises his presence, strength and help. When anxiety rises, place your hand on your chest and repeat the first clause slowly, “Do not fear,” then pause and name one thing you can actually do next.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from anxiety to prayer, and then to a peace that guards the heart and mind. Before a worrying task, take two minutes to turn each worry into a specific request, then leave the list with God.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David admits he is afraid, yet he chooses to trust, which is a useful model for honest faith. You might write “When I am afraid, I will trust you” on a card and keep it where you look during the day, such as on the bathroom mirror.

Verses for Weariness and Hard Seasons

Some seasons do not end quickly. Caring for a sick parent, working through a long illness or simply carrying too much can leave you depleted. These passages speak to strength that comes from God rather than from your own reserves.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him and find rest, and he describes his yoke as light. At the end of a long day, pause for one minute and name the burden you are carrying, then offer it to Jesus as if setting it down on a table.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

The prophet says God gives power to the faint and renewed strength to those who wait on him. If you are running on empty, choose one small rest this week, such as a walk without your phone, and treat it as an act of trust.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

The shepherd psalm moves through the valley of the shadow of death and still names God’s presence as the comfort. Read this verse slowly before bed on a hard night and notice the word “with,” since the comfort is found in companionship.

Verses for Quiet Moments of Waiting

Waiting for test results, a reply, or an answer to prayer can feel lonely. These verses remind you that God’s faithfulness does not depend on the timing you expect, and that he is at work even when nothing visible is changing.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Paul lists the things that cannot separate believers from God’s love, from death to powers to present troubles. Keep this passage on your phone’s lock screen for a week, and each time you see it, remind yourself that your waiting does not change your standing.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

In a book full of sorrow, this verse insists that God’s mercies are new every morning. Each morning this week, before checking your messages, say one sentence thanking God for his faithfulness to you that day.

Psalm 62:1-2

1 My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress— I will never be greatly shaken.

(WEB)

The psalmist says his soul waits in silence for God alone. Set aside five quiet minutes without screens and simply sit with God, letting him be the rock and salvation you return to.

How to Use These Verses

Write a few of these verses on index cards or in a notes app so they are ready when you need them, not only when you are looking for them. Choose one verse per week and read it at the same time each day, such as with your morning coffee, so it becomes familiar rather than a last resort.

When you pray with these passages, read the verse aloud first, then turn it into a sentence addressed to God, such as “Lord, you are near to me in this loss.” Let the verse shape your prayer rather than rushing past it to your own requests.

A Short Prayer for Comfort

Father, you are the God of all comfort, and I come to you today with the weight I am carrying. You know the places where I am grieving, afraid and tired, and you see what I cannot fix on my own. Draw near to me in the quiet, and let your presence be more real to me than my worries. Help me receive your comfort, and give me the grace to pass it on to someone else who needs it. Amen.
