This list gives you Bible readings for Veterans Day, chosen for those who served in uniform and for the families who waited, worried and prayed while they were gone. It is for veterans, active service members, spouses, children and anyone who wants to mark the day with Scripture that speaks to courage, loss, rest and gratitude. Each passage points to a God who sees people in hard places and does not leave them there.

Verses of Courage for Those Who Have Served

Service often means facing danger, fear and long stretches of uncertainty. The passages in this group speak to the moment when the mind wants to brace for the worst and needs a steadier word to stand on.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua received this command as he prepared to lead a people into unknown territory. For a veteran remembering a dangerous deployment, it recalls that courage was never meant to come from personal toughness alone. Before your next hard day, speak the verse aloud once and name one specific fear you are placing in God’s hands.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David wrote this psalm from a place of real threat, so his confidence is worth taking seriously. The verse ties fear to the question of who is actually protecting you. When memories of past danger return, try asking, “What is true about God right now?” and let the answer slow your breathing.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to a frightened people here, promising presence rather than the absence of trouble. Many veterans carry guilt or dread about what they saw and did. Let this verse remind you that the Lord’s strength is offered in weakness, and write the phrase “I am with you” on a card for your wallet.

Verses for Carrying Grief and Loss

Veterans Day can bring up the faces of friends who did not come home. These passages sit with sorrow honestly and point toward a comfort that does not hurry past the pain.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse names the nearness of God to people whose hearts are broken. Grief for a fallen comrade is not a sign of weak faith. On this day, you might light a candle or say a name aloud, trusting that the Lord knows exactly who you are missing.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

John describes a future where the sources of sorrow are finally gone. For someone who has buried friends or lived with lasting injury, this promise offers hope beyond the present ache. Consider reading it slowly at the end of the day and naming one loss you are asking God to heal.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God comforts us so we can comfort others. Veterans often find that people who have shared similar experiences understand them best. This passage invites you to let God’s comfort reach you and then to look for one fellow veteran or family member you might quietly encourage this week.

Verses for Rest, Peace and Coming Home

Returning from service, whether from a deployment or from years in uniform, can be its own adjustment. These verses speak to rest, the search for peace and the slow work of settling into ordinary life again.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites weary people to come to him and find rest. For those who are exhausted from vigilance, long hours or the strain of readjusting, this is a personal invitation. Take a few minutes of quiet on Veterans Day with no screens, and simply accept the offer.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to bring every worry to God in prayer and promises a peace beyond understanding. When anxiety about work, health or family rises up, this passage gives a clear next step. Write down the worry, follow it with a short prayer of thanks, and notice what changes.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This psalm pictures the Lord guarding both coming and going. For a veteran learning to trust again after a season of constant alert, the promise of ongoing protection can be steadying. Read it as you leave the house or return home, and let it mark the transition.

Verses of Gratitude and Honor

Veterans Day is also a day to give thanks for those who served and to honor the sacrifices that made freedom possible. These passages turn the heart toward gratitude and faithful remembrance.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

(WEB)

Jesus describes the greatest love as laying down one’s life for friends. Many veterans have seen this love embodied in comrades who risked everything for others. Take a moment to thank someone who served with you or to tell a family member what their sacrifice meant to you.

Romans 13:7

Therefore give everyone what you owe: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if customs, then customs; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

(WEB)

Paul teaches believers to give honor to whom honor is due. This verse gives a simple, concrete way to mark Veterans Day with respect. Consider sending a note of thanks to a veteran you know, or visiting a memorial to pay tribute in person.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sums up what the Lord asks of his people: to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. Those who served carry a particular call to live this way in peacetime. Choose one act of justice or kindness to do this week in honor of someone who served.

How to Use These Verses

Many people find it helpful to write one or two of these verses on a card and keep it where they will see it, such as on a mirror, in a wallet or beside a bed. Choose one verse for the day rather than trying to read all fifteen at once. Reading a verse aloud, especially in the morning or before a difficult moment, often helps it settle more deeply than silent reading does.

Consider reading a few of these passages together with a spouse, child or friend, and let each person share which verse stood out. Veterans and their families can also set aside time to pray over the verses together, asking God to guard those still serving and to comfort those who have lost someone. Keep the reading short and sincere, and let the day’s remembrance grow from there.

A Short Prayer for Veterans Day

Lord, you see those who gave years of their lives in service and those who waited at home with anxious hearts. Thank you for their courage, their sacrifice and the faithfulness that carried them through. Where memories are heavy, come near and bring the peace only you can give. Where grief is still fresh, hold those who miss someone they cannot get back. Guard those still serving, and guide each person who has come home into rest and purpose. Amen.
