This list gives you King James Version verses about a humble heart, for anyone who wants to live with a teachable spirit, a gentle tongue, and a willingness to put God and others first. The verses shown here are drawn from both Testaments and come at the subject from several angles: God’s regard for the lowly, the call to clothe ourselves with humility, and the promise of grace to those who admit they need it. Read them slowly and let each one correct a small pride you may not have noticed.

Verses for Starting the Day with Humility

Many people find that pride creeps in before the first meeting or the first conversation of the day. These verses ask God to meet you at the start of the morning, before your opinions have hardened and your schedule has begun to feel like a test you must pass.

Micah 6:8

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

(KJV)

Micah sums up what God requires in three short phrases, and humility is the one that holds the others together. Before you open your email, pause and name one specific way you will act justly and show mercy today. Then ask God to help you walk with Him in quiet dependence rather than self-direction.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

(KJV)

Leaning on your own understanding is a quiet form of pride, because it assumes you already know enough. Write the words “trust in the Lord” on a sticky note and place it where you will see it at your first coffee break. When a decision comes up, pause and ask God for direction before you act.

James 4:10

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

(KJV)

James links humbling yourself with being lifted up, and he places the responsibility for both in the Lord’s hands. Notice where you feel the urge to defend your reputation today. Instead of defending it, hand that concern to God and trust Him to act in His timing.

Verses for Pride, Correction, and Hard Conversations

Humility is tested most sharply when someone disagrees with you or points out a fault. The verses in this group speak to the moment when you are corrected, when you must admit a mistake, or when you need to receive counsel you did not ask for.

Proverbs 11:2

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

(KJV)

This proverb sets pride and humility side by side and shows where each leads. If you notice yourself bristling at feedback this week, treat that reaction as a signal. Thank the person who spoke, even if you need time to think about what they said.

Proverbs 16:18

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

(KJV)

Pride tends to come before a fall because it stops us from seeing our own weakness. Look for one area where you have been quick to assume you are right. Ask a trusted friend to tell you honestly how that attitude has come across to them.

1 Peter 5:5-6

5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time…

(KJV)

Peter urges the younger to submit and everyone to clothe themselves with humility, then points to God’s strong hand. When you feel the sting of correction, practice a simple sentence aloud: “You may be right, and I want to learn from this.” Then cast the worry about your standing onto God, who cares for you.

Verses for Serving Others Quietly

A humble heart often shows itself in unseen service: doing the dishes without announcing it, letting someone else take credit, or choosing the lower seat. These verses point to the example of Christ and call you to imitate His servant posture in ordinary places.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

(KJV)

Paul asks you to consider others better than yourself, which is a hard instruction in a world that rewards self-promotion. Choose one task today that nobody will notice and do it fully. Let that act be a small prayer that God would make your priorities His own.

Philippians 2:5-8

5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

(KJV)

This passage describes Christ setting aside His rightful honor and taking the form of a servant, all the way to the cross. Keep this picture in mind when you feel tempted to demand recognition. Ask yourself what it would look like to follow His pattern in the next conversation you have.

Matthew 20:26-28

26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: 28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

(KJV)

Jesus turns the world’s ideas of greatness upside down and says that the greatest must become a servant. Think of one person in your household or workplace who would benefit from your help today. Offer it without expecting thanks, and let God be the one who notices.

Verses for Trusting God in Weakness

A humble heart does not pretend to be strong. These verses speak to the moments when you feel small, limited, or unable to manage what is in front of you, and they show that God works through those very places of dependence.

Psalm 138:6

Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

(KJV)

The psalmist says the Lord regards the lowly and knows the proud from afar. When you feel overlooked, remember that God sees you clearly and attends to you with care. Speak a short thank-you to Him for noticing you, even when no one else seems to.

Isaiah 57:15

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place , with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

(KJV)

Isaiah describes God as dwelling with the contrite and humble in spirit, which is a striking promise of nearness. If you have something you are ashamed of or tired of carrying, bring it to Him in honest words today. Let the humble posture become a place of meeting, not shame.

2 Corinthians 12:9

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

(KJV)

Paul learned that God’s strength is made perfect in weakness, and he chose to boast in his limitations. Name one weakness you have been hiding and offer it to God as the place where His power can work. Then look for one ordinary way His grace shows up in that area this week.

How to Use These Verses

Write the references you find most useful on an index card or in the notes app on your phone, and keep them where you will see them during the day. Reading one verse each morning before you check messages is often easier than trying to read the whole list at once. Over time, the words will come back to you during the moments when pride would otherwise take over.

Pray the verses rather than only reading them. Turn a line like “Lord, cast my pride down and make me teachable” into your own words, and return to it when you notice a defensive reaction. Share one verse with a friend who has been struggling with the same thing, and ask them to check in with you about how you are doing.

A Short Prayer for a humble heart

Lord, I confess that pride often rises in me quickly, especially when I feel unseen or challenged. Thank You that You regard the lowly and draw near to those who are honest about their need. Teach me to listen well, to receive correction with a grateful heart, and to serve people without needing applause. Where I am tempted to defend my reputation, remind me that my worth rests in You. Shape my thoughts and words so that they reflect the gentleness of Christ. Amen.
