This list gives you Bible verses about keeping promises, arranged by the moments when keeping your word is hardest: early mornings when you have already committed to something, conversations where a promise was made in haste, and seasons when you wonder whether anyone notices. It is written for anyone who has said “I will” and wants Scripture to shape how they follow through. The verses share a common thread: God is faithful, and His people are called to reflect that faithfulness in what they say and do.

Verses for the Morning You Want to Back Out

Some promises look smaller in the morning light than they did when you made them. These passages speak to the moment when your plans feel heavy and the easier path seems tempting. They remind you that your word matters because God’s word matters.

Psalm 15:4

In whose eyes a vile man is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; he who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and doesn’t change…

(WEB)

This psalm describes the person who may dwell with God, and one mark is that they keep their oath even when it costs them. Before you leave the house today, name the one commitment you are tempted to drop, and decide now that you will honor it.

Numbers 30:2

When a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

(WEB)

Moses speaks plainly here: a vow made to the Lord must not be broken, and the person must do what they said. Write down the exact words you gave to someone this week, so you are not tempted to remember them more loosely than you spoke them.

Ecclesiastes 5:4-5

4 When you vow a vow to God, don’t defer to pay it; for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay that which you vow. 5 It is better that you should not vow, than that you should vow and not pay.

(WEB)

The Teacher advises caution before making a vow, and then urges you to pay what you promised rather than make excuses. If you have already made a commitment, pay it today in the smallest concrete step you can take, such as sending the email or making the call.

Verses for Conversations Where a Word Is Given

Promises are often made in passing: a quick “I’ll pray for you,” a “let’s meet next week,” a “I’ll take care of it.” These verses address the speech that carries real weight and the call to let your yes mean yes.

Matthew 5:37

But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.

(WEB)

Jesus says simple speech is enough, and that anything more than a plain yes or no comes from something other than truth. Before you agree to something new this week, pause for one breath and ask whether you can actually do what you are about to say.

James 5:12

But above all things, my brothers, don’t swear— not by heaven, or by the earth, or by any other oath; but let your “yes” be “yes”, and your “no”, “no”; so that you don’t fall into hypocrisy.

(WEB)

James warns against swearing oaths to strengthen your word, since a person of integrity needs no such help. Practice saying “I will try” when you are unsure, instead of promising more than you can deliver.

Proverbs 12:22

Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who do the truth are his delight.

(WEB)

Proverbs contrasts lying lips with those who act faithfully, and this verse names faithfulness as the delight of the Lord. Choose one person in your life who depends on your word, and make a small check-in with them today to show your reliability.

Verses for Seasons When Faithfulness Feels Costly

Keeping a promise is not always easy, especially when circumstances change or the other person disappoints you. These passages point to the faithfulness of God as the foundation for ours and encourage you to keep going when the reward is slow to arrive.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

In the middle of grief, the writer remembers that God’s faithfulness is new every morning. When you feel worn down by a long obligation, start your day by thanking God for His steady faithfulness toward you.

Hebrews 10:23

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful.

(WEB)

The writer urges believers to hold fast to their confession without wavering, because the one who promised is faithful. Identify one promise you are close to giving up on, and ask God for the strength to hold it steady for one more day.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

Commit your way to the Lord, and trust Him to act. Name the situation where you feel stuck between a promise and a changed reality, and bring it to God in a short prayer before you decide your next step.

2 Corinthians 1:20

For however many are the promises of God, in him is the “Yes.” Therefore also through him is the “Amen”, to the glory of God through us.

(WEB)

Paul says every promise of God finds its yes in Christ, which gives your own commitments a deeper root. Remind yourself that your faithfulness is answering a God who has already kept every promise He made.

Psalm 119:106

I have sworn, and have confirmed it, that I will obey your righteous ordinances.

(WEB)

The psalmist vows to keep God’s righteous decrees and holds to that vow. Consider writing one promise you have made to God, such as a daily habit of prayer, and review it each evening.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses from this list and write them where you will see them daily, such as on a card in your wallet, a note on your mirror, or the lock screen of your phone. Keep them near the places where you tend to make commitments, like your calendar or your messaging app, so the reminder arrives just as you are deciding what to say yes to.

Read one verse each morning and ask God to show you any promise you need to honor that day. At the end of the week, review the commitments you made and note where you followed through, giving thanks for each small faithfulness.

A Short Prayer for Keeping Promises

Lord, you have never broken a promise, and I thank you for that steady faithfulness. Help me to speak only what I can truly keep, and give me the courage to follow through when my plans change or my strength runs low. Where I have already made commitments I am tempted to abandon, show me the next faithful step and give me grace to take it. Let my yes be honest and my word be dependable, so that others can see something of your character in the way I live. Amen.
