This list gives you Bible verses about relationships, each paired with a short explanation of what it means for the people you live, work and worship alongside. It is for anyone who wants Scripture to guide how they love a spouse, a friend, a child, a coworker or a difficult neighbor. Most of these passages share one conviction: God designed us for connection, and he shapes that connection through love, humility and forgiveness.

Verses for Loving Someone Well Day by Day

Love in a relationship is less about grand gestures and more about the small, repeated choices made at the kitchen table or over a text message. The verses in this section point you toward the everyday kind of love the Bible describes, the kind that shows up when you are tired and nobody is watching.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

(WEB)

Paul describes love by what it does and what it refuses to do. Try reading these two verses before a conversation with someone you love, and pick one trait, such as patience, to practice in that exact conversation.

Colossians 3:12-13

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness and gentleness, the way you would dress for a particular occasion. Each morning, name one specific quality you will put on before you walk into your home or office.

1 John 4:7

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God.

(WEB)

John ties human love to its source, saying love comes from God and that everyone who loves has been born of him. When you feel your affection running low, pause and ask God to refill it, rather than trying to manufacture it alone.

Verses for Forgiveness After Hurt

Every close relationship eventually includes a wound, whether a careless word or a broken promise. These verses speak to the hard work of forgiving, which the Bible presents as both a command and a grace we receive from God first.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul links our willingness to forgive with the forgiveness we have received in Christ. Before you decide whether someone has earned your forgiveness, remember how much you have been forgiven, and let that memory set the tone.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Jesus says forgiveness flows between the forgiven and the forgiver, and he treats it as a serious matter. Use this passage to examine whether you are holding a grudge, and name that grudge honestly in prayer this week.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

This verse asks you to bear with one another and forgive whatever complaint you have, just as the Lord forgave you. Forgiveness here is something you practice again and again, so consider writing down one offense you are ready to release.

Verses for Friendship, Community and Kindness

Friendship is one of the great gifts of the Christian life, and the Bible speaks plainly about its value. The passages here describe what it looks like to stand beside someone, to speak truth gently, and to show up when it counts.

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

Proverbs describes a friend who loves at all times and a brother born for adversity. Think of one friend who has stayed loyal through a hard season, and send that person a message of thanks today.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

The Teacher observes that two people accomplish more than one and can help each other up when they fall. Ask a friend how they are really doing this week, and be ready to offer practical help as well as encouragement.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to be devoted to one another in love and to outdo each other in showing honor. Look for one way to honor someone in your life this week, perhaps by praising them in front of others or serving them quietly.

Verses for Patience and Gentle Speech

Conflict and misunderstanding test every relationship, and often the first casualty is our tone. The verses in this final section focus on slowing down, choosing words carefully, and trusting God to work in the people we find hardest to love.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

James advises that everyone should be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger. In your next disagreement, make a point of listening until the other person has finished before you formulate your reply.

Proverbs 15:1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

(WEB)

This proverb observes that a gentle answer turns away wrath while a harsh word stirs up anger. When you feel heat rising in a conversation, lower your voice and slow your pace, even if the other person has not.

Ephesians 4:2

With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love…

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to live with humility, gentleness and patience, bearing with one another in love. Pick the person who tests your patience most, and pray for them by name each morning for the next week.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Paul invites you to regard others as more important than yourself and to look to their interests. Before a difficult talk, ask yourself what the other person most needs to hear, and let that question shape what you say.

1 Peter 4:8

And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.

(WEB)

Peter says love covers a multitude of sins, which means it chooses to overlook small offenses rather than keep score. Notice one minor irritation today and decide, deliberately, to let it go without a word.

How to Use These Verses

Reading a verse once is pleasant, but returning to it over weeks is what shapes a relationship. Write two or three of these verses on an index card and keep it in your wallet, on your bathroom mirror or in your phone’s notes. Read it before you leave for work, before a visit with family, or before a difficult phone call.

Pray the verses back to God rather than only reading them. Turn a verse like Ephesians 4:32 into a request, asking the Lord to help you forgive the person you have in mind. Revisit the same passage at the end of each week and note what has changed in how you speak and listen.

A Short Prayer for Relationships

Lord, you know every person I love and every person who frustrates me. Thank you for the relationships you have given me, and forgive me for the times I have been impatient, unkind or quick to judge. Teach me to love as you love, patiently and without keeping score. Soften my heart where it has grown hard, and help me speak with gentleness when I am tempted to speak in anger. Bring healing and peace to the connections that feel broken, and guide my words and actions so they reflect your grace. Amen.
