This list gives you Scripture and prayers to read, share, or speak at a retirement celebration, whether you are the one retiring, a family member, a colleague, or the person asked to say a few words. Every verse here points to the same things: a life of faithful work is seen by God, the next season is held in his hands, and gratitude is a fitting response to both.

Verses for Honoring Years of Faithful Work

Long careers often go unnoticed once the last day arrives. These verses name the quiet value of diligent, honest labor and remind the room that what was done with care was never wasted.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Paul writes to people who worked for others, yet he tells them their real employer is the Lord. Read this aloud before the toasts begin, so the room remembers that years of ordinary tasks were offered to God as well as to the company.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.

(WEB)

The Teacher urges wholehearted effort in whatever the hand finds to do. Consider writing this on a card for the retiree, a reminder that full commitment to the work mattered and that the effort was seen.

Proverbs 22:29

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won’t serve obscure men.

(WEB)

Skill and diligence earn a lasting place of honor. Share this at the celebration to name a specific skill the retiree built over decades, then let the people in the room add their own examples.

Verses for Trusting the Next Chapter

Leaving a familiar routine can bring relief, grief, and uncertainty all at once. These passages speak to the unknown ahead and to the steady presence of God who goes before each day.

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God announces something new springing up, even in a wilderness. For someone stepping into unstructured days, this is a hopeful word. Carry it into the first week of retirement by noticing one small new thing each morning.

Psalm 23:1-3

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

(WEB)

The shepherd leads his sheep to green pasture and quiet water. Retirement can feel like wandering without a map, and this psalm offers rest in a guide who knows the way. Pray it slowly on the first morning with no alarm set.

Isaiah 46:4

Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

(WEB)

God promises to carry his people through every stage, including old age. Give this verse to the retiree in writing, reminding them that the one who sustained their working years will sustain the years ahead.

Verses for Gratitude and Shared Joy

A celebration is a moment to thank God and each other. These verses help the gathering turn from speeches about the past to thanksgiving for the people and blessings that made the journey possible.

Psalm 107:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

This short call to thanks is a fitting opening for a retirement gathering. Invite everyone present to name one specific thing they are thankful for about the retiree before anyone speaks at length.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

(WEB)

Paul asks for thanks in every circumstance, not because every circumstance is good, but because God is faithful within it. Use this as the closing thought of a toast, linking the retiree’s thankfulness to the thanks the room offers back.

Philippians 1:3-5

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now…

(WEB)

Paul remembers his friends with joy and thanks for their partnership. Read this to recognize the relationships formed through shared work, and consider reading it aloud as a tribute from the team.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven…

(WEB)

There is a time for every season under heaven. Retirement marks the close of one season and the start of another. Use this verse to frame the day as a turning point rather than an ending.

Verses for Blessing the Years Ahead

Many retirement gatherings close with a hope for health, peace, and purpose in the coming years. These verses offer that hope in the words of Scripture.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This priestly blessing has been spoken over God’s people for centuries. Ask a pastor, elder, or family member to speak it over the retiree as the final act of the evening.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God speaks of plans for hope and a future to a people in exile. Retirees often wonder what their days are for, and this promise reminds them that the Lord still has purposes for them.

Psalm 92:12-14

12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree. He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 They are planted in the LORD’s house. They will flourish in our God’s courts. 14 They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green…

(WEB)

The righteous flourish like trees that stay fruitful in old age. This image fits a retiree who wants to keep growing. Discuss with them what new fruit they hope to bear in the next decade.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

(WEB)

Paul says that while the outer person wastes away, the inner person is renewed daily. Share this with a retiree facing physical limits, encouraging them to focus on the renewal God is working within.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Be strong and courageous, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. This was spoken to a leader stepping into unfamiliar ground, and it suits anyone entering a new chapter. Write it on a card to tuck into a gift or a retirement book.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that fit the retiree’s personality and the tone of the event. A printed card at each table, a verse read before the meal, or a handwritten note in a gift bag all work well. Shorter passages such as Joshua 1:9 or 1 Thessalonians 5:18 are easy for guests to remember and repeat.

Read the passages aloud during the celebration or the days before it, and invite the retiree to say which one they would like to keep close. Praying a verse back to God, turning it into a sentence of thanks or request, makes the Scripture personal and gives the family or team a shared language for the season ahead.

A Short Prayer for a Retirement Celebration

Lord, thank you for the years of work you gave to this friend, colleague, or family member. You saw every early morning, every hard decision, and every quiet act of care that no one else recorded. We give you thanks for the skill, patience, and faithfulness that filled those days. Now we ask you to lead them into this new season with peace and purpose. Let each day ahead hold rest, fellowship, and fresh discovery. Keep them in your strength, and remind them that they remain yours wherever they go. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord bless you and keep you as you step into this new season. May he make his face shine upon you and give you peace in every unhurried morning. May the work you did be remembered with gratitude, and may the years ahead bear fruit that surprises you. Go in peace, and rest in the faithfulness of God.
