This list gives you Scripture and prayers for marking a church anniversary, whether you are planning the service, speaking from the pulpit, or simply thanking God with the congregation you belong to. Each verse points to God’s faithfulness across generations and invites a response of gratitude and renewed commitment. The verses share a common thread: they remember what God has done, and they look ahead to what He will continue to do.

Verses of Remembrance and Thanksgiving

Anniversaries invite us to look back. These passages call God’s people to recall His past works, to thank Him plainly, and to tell the next generation what He has done among them.

Psalm 105:1-2

1 Give thanks to the LORD! Call on his name! Make his doings known among the peoples. 2 Sing to him, sing praises to him! Tell of all his marvelous works.

Thanksgiving is meant to be spoken aloud, not just felt. On the anniversary morning, say one specific thing your church has been given over the years, such as a family that found healing in its fellowship, and thank God for it by name before the service begins.

Deuteronomy 8:2

You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or not.

(WEB)

Moses told Israel to remember the long road God had led them along. Write down three seasons your congregation walked through, the hard ones included, and read them aloud during the anniversary gathering so that remembering becomes a shared act.

Psalm 77:11-12

11 I will remember Yah’s deeds; for I will remember your wonders of old. 12 I will also meditate on all your work, and consider your doings.

(WEB)

The psalmist chose to meditate on God’s deeds rather than on present gloom. Ask two or three older members to share a memory of how God met the church in a difficult year, and let their stories set the tone of gratitude for the day.

Verses for Looking Back With Honest Hearts

Not every year of a church’s life was easy. These verses make room for grief over losses and for the honest confession that the church has sometimes fallen short, while still anchoring hope in God’s mercy.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Even in a book of sorrow, Jeremiah names God’s mercies as new every morning. If the anniversary brings sadness over members who have passed or departed, let this verse frame your prayer that God’s faithfulness outlasts every loss.

Psalm 90:1-2

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

(WEB)

Moses, the man of God, wrote this psalm about the eternal dwelling place of God across generations. Use it to remind your people that the church’s years are short beside a God who has always been the congregation’s home.

Nehemiah 9:17

And refused to obey. They weren’t mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and didn’t forsake them.

(WEB)

The Levites confessed Israel’s failures while praising God’s readiness to forgive. Set aside a moment in the anniversary service for honest confession and then for a clear word of pardon, so that the celebration is not built on pretending.

Verses for Looking Ahead in Hope

An anniversary is also a doorway into the next season. These passages encourage the church to trust God with what is coming and to commit its future to His care.

Joshua 24:15

If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(WEB)

Joshua called Israel to decide again whom they would serve. Invite each member to write a personal commitment for the coming year and place it on a table at the front, turning the anniversary into a fresh renewal of devotion.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul was confident that the God who began a good work would finish it. Name the ministries you hope will grow in the next decade, then pray over each one, trusting that the work God started in your congregation is not finished.

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God promised to do something new, even in a dry land. Ask the leadership to share one fresh step the church is considering, and close the day by praying for courage to walk into it.

Verses for Gathering as One Body

A church anniversary is a family reunion as much as a milestone. These verses celebrate unity, shared worship and the love that holds a congregation together through the years.

Psalm 133:1

See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!

(WEB)

David praised the goodness of brothers and sisters living together in unity. Invite former members and visitors to the celebration, and make space for them to greet longtime friends as the body reunites.

Hebrews 10:24-25

24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

(WEB)

The writer urged believers to keep meeting together and to spur one another on in love. Choose one member who has served faithfully for many years and publicly thank them, so the anniversary becomes an encouragement to keep showing up.

Ephesians 4:3-4

3 Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling…

(WEB)

Paul urged believers to keep the unity of the Spirit through peace. Before the service ends, invite the congregation to pass the peace to someone they have not yet greeted that day, making unity visible in a simple gesture.

How to Use These Verses

Write the anniversary passages on cards for the leadership team, the worship leader and the pastor, so that each one reads from the same Scripture. Print a short reading list in the bulletin so members can carry these verses home and read them through the week after the celebration.

Read the remembrance verses in the first part of the service, the hope verses near the close, and let the unity verses shape the fellowship time afterward. Praying a verse aloud before speaking to a group helps the words settle in the room, not just in the minds of those who planned the day.

A Short Prayer for Church Anniversaries

Lord, we thank You for the years You have given this church. You called us together, You kept us through seasons we did not choose, and You have never stopped being faithful to us. We remember the people who prayed here before us, and we ask You to make us worthy of their trust. Forgive us where we have grown careless, and renew our love for one another. Lead us into the years ahead with humble hearts and open hands. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord who has walked with this congregation through every season continue to go before you. May He make your fellowship deep, your worship sincere and your service joyful. May the God who began a good work among you bring it to completion, and may you go out from this day strengthened to love one another and to serve the world He loves.
