This list gives you Scripture and short prayers for Father’s Day, whether you are a father being honored, a child remembering a dad who is gone, or someone who has been the steady presence a young person needed. These verses have one thing in common: they speak of God as a faithful Father and of fathers as people called to love, guide and keep showing up.

Verses for Gratitude and Honor

Many people carry mixed feelings on this day, with thankfulness for some things and grief or disappointment about others. These passages begin with honor and gratitude, and they point toward the God who sees every father’s effort clearly.

Ephesians 6:1-4

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: 3 “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.” 4 You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Paul speaks to children and to fathers in the same passage, which tells you that family life runs in both directions. If you are a child, write down one specific thing your father did that you are thankful for, and tell him this week. If you are a father, read verse 4 slowly and ask God which habit of your own needs gentleness today.

Proverbs 23:22

Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.

(WEB)

This proverb asks children to listen to the father who raised them and not to despise him in old age. Choose one ordinary conversation today, a phone call or a shared meal, and let it be a small act of listening in return.

Psalm 103:13

Like a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.

(WEB)

The psalmist compares God’s compassion to a father’s tenderness toward his children. When you think of your own dad, or of how you have parented, let this verse remind you that the kind of love you hope for is first found in God, and then you can pass it on in small, patient ways.

Verses for Fathers Who Feel Stretched Thin

Fathering often happens in tired, unseen moments: the late shift, the broken bike, the worry you cannot quite name. These verses speak to dads who feel they are giving more than they have.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah promises strength to the weary and those who lack power. Keep a copy of these verses in your wallet or on your phone, and read them at the first stoplight of a long day. The point is not to feel superhuman, but to remember where your strength actually comes from.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Jesus invites the burdened to come to him and find rest. Before you go to bed tonight, name the one thing you are carrying hardest as a father, then pray that you would hand it over rather than carry it alone.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes about not growing weary in doing good, with the promise of a harvest in due time. Fatherhood is long, and most of its fruit comes slowly. Pick one daily act of faithfulness, such as a bedtime prayer or a note in a lunchbox, and keep doing it even when no one notices.

Verses for Remembering a Father Who Is Gone

For some, this day brings loss, whether through death, distance or estrangement. These passages do not pretend the ache is absent. They rest the heart in a God who holds the fatherless and the grieving.

Psalm 68:5

A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

(WEB)

The psalm calls God a father to the fatherless and a defender of widows. If your father is no longer here, or was never the father you needed, speak this truth aloud. Then ask God to meet you in the particular absence you feel today.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

God is near to those who are brokenhearted. Give yourself permission to feel what you feel on this day. Light a candle, look at an old photograph, or simply sit quietly for five minutes and let this verse be enough for now.

John 14:18

I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.

(WEB)

Jesus tells his disciples he will not leave them as orphans. Whatever your family history, write this promise on a card and place it where you will see it. Let it be a reminder that you are not without a home in God.

Verses for Fathers Seeking Wisdom in Leading

Good fathering is not only warmth; it also involves guidance, discipline and the courage to lead by example. These verses help fathers ask for wisdom in the decisions that shape their families.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James encourages anyone lacking wisdom to ask God, who gives generously without finding fault. Before your next hard conversation with your child, pause and make this request in a single honest sentence. You do not need a perfect answer, only a willing heart.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

Moses tells parents to talk about God’s words at home and on the road, at rest and at work. Think about one ordinary moment this week, such as a drive or a walk, where you can speak of faith naturally rather than only in formal settings.

Colossians 3:21

Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged.

(WEB)

Paul warns fathers not to provoke their children so they become discouraged. Use this verse as a quick check before you correct or criticize. Ask yourself whether your words will build your child up or wear their spirit down, and adjust your tone if needed.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these verses on index cards or in a notes app, and keep them where you will naturally see them: the bathroom mirror, the car visor, or the kitchen counter. Reading a verse aloud twice in the morning tends to stay with you longer than reading ten verses once. If you are sharing this list with a family member, you might each choose a verse and talk about why it matters to you.

Pray these verses rather than only reading them. Turn one into a sentence of prayer, such as “Lord, give me the wisdom I lack as a father today.” You can also use a verse as the starting point for a short prayer walk, a quiet moment in the car, or a family devotion after dinner. The goal is a conversation with God that gradually shapes how you father, honor and remember.

A Short Prayer for Father’s Day

Heavenly Father, thank you for being the one who never leaves us and never fails to love us. Today we remember the fathers who have carried us, guided us and sometimes disappointed us, and we ask you to meet each of those memories with your mercy. For the dads who are tired, give them rest. For the children who ache for a father who is not here, comfort them with your nearness. For every man who is learning how to father, give him patience, honesty and courage. Shape our families with your wisdom, and let your love be visible in our ordinary days. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord who is a Father to the fatherless go before you and behind you today. May he steady your hands, soften your heart and remind you that you are loved. And may the good you sow in your family grow into something you will see and give thanks for in time.
