This list gives you Bible verses and prayers for Pentecost, the day the church remembers the Holy Spirit coming upon the first believers in Jerusalem. It is for anyone who wants to read Scripture on this feast, whether you are preparing a Sunday sermon, leading a family devotion, or simply wanting to ask God for a fresh filling of his Spirit. Each verse points to the same truth: the Spirit of God is given, present, and at work among his people.

Verses About the Promise of the Spirit

Before the Spirit arrived in the upper room, Jesus had already told his disciples what was coming. These verses record that promise and the assurance that God keeps his word, even when the waiting feels long.

John 14:16-17

16 I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks of another Helper who will stay with his followers forever. When you feel alone in a hard season, pause and name the Spirit as your companion, then ask him to make his presence real in the next conversation you have.

Acts 1:4-5

4 Being assembled together with them, he commanded them, “Don’t depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which you heard from me. 5 For John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

(WEB)

The disciples were told to wait in Jerusalem, not to rush ahead on their own plans. Waiting well is itself a spiritual practice, so choose one unhurried stretch of your day this week and spend it asking God what you are waiting for.

Ezekiel 36:26-27

26 I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes. You will keep my ordinances and do them.

(WEB)

Long before Pentecost, God promised to give his people a new heart and his own Spirit within them. Read these lines slowly and tell God where your heart feels stubborn or tired, trusting that he is the one who softens it.

Verses for Power, Courage, and Boldness

The Spirit who came at Pentecost did not produce a quiet, private faith. He sent ordinary people out to speak, serve, and stand firm. These verses are for moments when you need courage to act on what you believe.

Acts 2:1-4

1 Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.

(WEB)

The account of the day itself, with the sound like rushing wind and the tongues of fire. Picture the crowded room and the sudden change, then ask God to bring the same kind of unmistakable presence into your ordinary Tuesday.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”

(WEB)

Power comes with a purpose: to be witnesses in ordinary places near home and far away. Choose one person you can encourage or speak a kind word to today, and let that small step be your answer to this verse.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Paul reminds Timothy that God gives a spirit of power, love, and self-control rather than fear. When fear rises before a difficult conversation, breathe out slowly and repeat this sentence until your shoulders drop.

Romans 8:11

But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

(WEB)

The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in believers. Write this verse on a card and place it where you will see it during a long or discouraging day, reminding yourself that the power at work in you is the power of resurrection.

Verses for Unity, Gifts, and Life Together

Pentecost also gave birth to a community that spoke many languages yet shared one faith. These verses speak to how the Spirit draws people together and equips each one for service.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7

4 Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord. 6 There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all.

(WEB)

Paul explains that there are many gifts but one Spirit, given for the good of all. Think of one gift you have seen in someone else this month and thank God for it in a message or a quick prayer.

Ephesians 4:3-4

3 Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling…

(WEB)

The call is to keep the unity the Spirit creates, which takes patience and gentleness in real relationships. Before your next family meal or team meeting, ask God to help you be the one who makes peace easier to keep.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, and the rest. Pick one quality from the list you most need right now and name it in prayer each morning this week, asking God to grow it in you.

Romans 8:26-27

26 In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. 27 He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.

(WEB)

The Spirit helps us in weakness, interceding with words too deep for speech. If you struggle to pray, let this verse be permission to offer a simple groan or a single word to God, trusting the Spirit to carry the rest.

Verses for Ongoing Renewal and Hope

Pentecost was not a single event to be remembered and then set aside. These verses invite you to keep returning to God for renewal, confident that the Spirit continues to work in his people.

Ephesians 3:16-19

16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, 19 and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

(WEB)

Paul prays that believers would be strengthened in their inner being and grounded in love. Use this passage as a prayer for someone you know who feels spiritually dry, and ask God to strengthen them through his Spirit.

Joel 2:28-29

28 “It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. 29 And also on the servants and on the handmaids in those days, I will pour out my Spirit.

(WEB)

Peter quoted this prophecy on the day of Pentecost, showing that God’s promise to pour out his Spirit reached all people. Name the young people, older adults, and friends in your life, and pray that they would experience this outpouring too.

Psalm 51:10-12

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. 11 Don’t throw me from your presence, and don’t take your holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold me with a willing spirit.

(WEB)

David asks God to create a clean heart and not to take his Holy Spirit away. Let this be your honest prayer if you feel distant from God today, asking him to restore the joy of your salvation.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

God’s mercies are new every morning, even after a season of loss and grief. When you wake tomorrow, read these words before you check your phone and receive that day as a fresh gift from him.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

God gives strength to the weary and renews those who wait on him. If your energy is running low, sit quietly for a few minutes and ask God to give you the strength you cannot find in yourself.

How to Use These Verses

You can read these verses on Pentecost itself or in the days before and after it. Many people find it helpful to read one passage each morning for a week, write down a single phrase that stands out, and return to it during the day. Keeping a simple notebook or a note on your phone makes it easier to see how God answers over time.

Praying the verses is often more fruitful than only reading them. Turn a promise into a request by saying the words back to God, such as “Lord, pour out your Spirit on my family,” or “Give me courage to speak today.” Pray them aloud if you can, and invite someone else to pray with you so that the Spirit’s work is shared in community.

A Short Prayer for Pentecost

Holy Spirit, you came with wind and fire and gave courage to frightened people who had been hiding behind locked doors. I ask you to come into my life in the same way today. Make me bold where I have been timid, gentle where I have been harsh, and faithful where I have been tired. Help me to love the people around me and to keep the peace you give. Fill me again with your presence, and let my life point to Jesus. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Spirit who came on the day of Pentecost fill your heart with peace and your mind with truth. May he give you courage for the work ahead and patience for the people you love. May the Lord go before you, beside you, and within you, now and always. Amen.
