This prayer is for the moment before, during or after a church potluck, when a room full of people is sharing food, chairs and conversation. Pray it as you set out your dish, as you greet someone at the serving table, or as you gather the group to give thanks before eating. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Blessings for a Church Potluck

Lord, thank you for this table and for the people who have brought something to share. Some of them cooked all morning, some grabbed a bag of rolls on the way over, and some are coming with a heavy week behind them. Be present in the kitchen, the fellowship hall and the parking lot. Help us to see one another as family and not as a crowd to be managed.

Bless the hands that prepared this food and the hands that will clean up afterward. Watch over the children running between the tables, the older members who need a seat close to the door, and the new visitor who doesn’t yet know where to sit. Give each of us a kind word for someone who looks lonely. Keep us from comparing our casseroles or judging anyone’s offering.

Feed us in body and in spirit. Let the laughter and the stories around these tables remind us that we belong to you and to each other. Thank you for providing for us, and help us to be generous in return. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, bless this food and the people who made it. Bless the friends I will sit with, the newcomers I haven’t met, and the ones who are hurting quietly. Help me to be warm and patient, and to be a blessing before the afternoon is over. Thank you for this gathering. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Acts 2:46

Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart…

(WEB)

This verse describes the early church sharing meals with glad and generous hearts. Pray it as a request that your potluck would have that same simplicity and joy, with no one left out of the circle.

Romans 12:13

Contributing to the needs of the saints; given to hospitality.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to share with those in need and to practice hospitality. Pray this verse for the people who will come with empty plates or heavy hearts, asking God to help you notice them.

Psalm 133:1

See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!

(WEB)

The psalmist celebrates brothers and sisters living together in unity. Use this verse to ask God to heal any small frictions in your congregation and to make your time together peaceful.

Hebrews 13:2

Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it.

(WEB)

This verse reminds us that welcoming strangers can mean welcoming someone unexpected. Pray it for the visitors at your potluck, asking the Lord to open your eyes to who he is sending through the door.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

(WEB)

Paul asks that the peace of Christ rule in our hearts and that we be thankful. Pray this verse as you gather, asking for a thankful spirit that settles the room and steadies everyone’s conversations.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the longer version quietly as you arrange your dish on the serving table, while the first people are still finding their seats. Let your hands stay busy with a spoon or a stack of paper plates, and let the prayer come in short pauses between tasks. It works well for a host, a volunteer in the kitchen, or anyone who feels they are watching the room more than enjoying it.

If you are leading the group in grace, you might invite others to pray the shorter version with you, one sentence each, before the first plate is filled. Ask a child, a youth leader or a longtime member to start, so that the blessing belongs to the whole congregation and not only to the one at the front.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this gathering and keep each person who sits at these tables. May he fill the room with warmth, make room for the stranger, and send everyone home knowing they were seen and cared for.
