This prayer is for the moment before you eat with family, friends, or a crowded table of people you love and some you find hard to love. Pray it aloud just before the first dish is passed, or read it quietly while the food is still steaming. You can pray it exactly as written or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Blessings for a Holiday Meal
Lord, thank you for this table and for the food on it. Thank you for the hands that cooked, the hands that set the plates, and the hands that will wash the dishes afterward. Thank you that you have gathered us here, people who have history, opinions, and wounds, and that you are present with us in the middle of all of it.
Some of us are carrying things we have not mentioned. There may be an empty chair, a diagnosis we are still learning to say out loud, or a conversation we dread after the pie. Calm our hearts where they are anxious. Give us patience with the relatives who push our buttons, and humility to notice when we are the ones who need to soften. Keep our words kind, our laughter honest, and our listening careful.
Bless the ones who are far away and the ones who are missing from the table this year. Be near to anyone who is eating alone tonight, and make us generous enough to notice them. Let this meal nourish our bodies and remind us that everything we have comes from you. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, thank you for this food and for the people around us. Calm the noise in our hearts, help us speak gently, and let us enjoy one another today. Remind us that you are here at this table with us. Be near the ones who are missing and the ones who are hurting. Bless the hands that prepared this meal. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 107:1
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.
(WEB)
Start here when you feel grateful and also tired. Naming God’s goodness out loud before you name your complaints can change how the whole meal feels.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Use this when the day already feels full of pressure. Bring each worry to God as a specific request, then notice how your mind settles a little when you put it into words.
Romans 12:18
If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.
(WEB)
Pray this for the difficult relative at the table. It asks God to help you do your part toward peace, even when you cannot control how others respond.
Colossians 3:15
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
(WEB)
Pray this as you gather around the food. Ask that the peace of Christ would rule in your hearts and make you thankful for the people you are sharing this meal with.
Psalm 145:15-16
15 The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season. 16 You open your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
(WEB)
Read this slowly while you wait to eat. It reminds you that God is the one who provides daily bread, and it invites you to receive the meal as his gift.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it in the minute before you sit down, when everyone is still standing and the room is full of movement. If you can, pause with your hands resting on the back of your chair or on the edge of the table. Let your body settle while your voice catches up. If children are present, you might invite them to pray a line of their own afterward, or simply ask them what they are thankful for.
Someone else at the table can lead it if you would rather not. A grandparent, a teenager, or a guest who has never prayed in front of others may welcome the chance. Before the meal, you could also pass the prayer around, letting each person read one paragraph. Whoever prays, keep it short enough that the food does not go cold.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless you and keep you through this day. May he make his face shine on the people you love and give them peace. May the food nourish you, the conversation warm you, and the love in this room remind you that you are never alone.
