This prayer is for men preparing to attend a men’s retreat, or for those already in the middle of one. It is best prayed before the first session, on the drive there, or late at night when the day’s conversations have settled. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words to the God who already knows what you are carrying into the weekend.

Blessings for a Men’s Retreat

Lord, you know the men gathering this weekend. Some came because a friend asked them to, and some came because they have been quietly hoping for something to change. Some arrive tired from work, worried about money or a marriage, or carrying the weight of a parent who is getting older. Some have not told anyone how heavy their week has been. Meet each one where he is. Let no man leave feeling he had to earn a place at the table.

Give them honesty without shame. Let the talk be real, let the silences be comfortable, and let the older men speak with humility and the younger men speak without fear. Where pride has built walls, gently take them down. Where a man has been carrying something alone, give him a brother who will carry the other end. Teach us to listen more than we talk, and to pray for one another even when we do not yet know each other’s names.

Father, we ask for your presence in every meal, every hike, every campfire and every quiet walk. Be the one who speaks clearly when our hearts are noisy. Send each man home lighter, clearer and more ready to love his family, his work and his neighbors. We trust you to finish what you have started in us this weekend. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless the men around me this weekend. Give me a open ear and a quiet tongue. Where I feel uncertain or out of place, remind me that you have brought me here on purpose. Help me to be a brother who notices who is struggling and who is leaning in. Let something true take root in me before I drive home. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Pray this for the friendships that form at a retreat. Thank God for the companions he places beside you, and ask him to make you the kind of man who helps a brother up when he falls.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.

(WEB)

Ask God to sharpen you through honest conversation this weekend. Pray that the iron of your questions and convictions will meet another man’s iron, and that both of you will come away more like Christ.

Psalm 133:1

See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!

(WEB)

Pray for unity among the men gathered. Ask that old divisions of age, background and opinion would give way to a shared love for Jesus, and that brotherhood would feel like a gift rather than a duty.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Bring to God the burdens you are carrying and the ones you have noticed in others. Ask him to help you bear them together, and to show you practical ways to lighten another man’s load during the weekend.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray for renewed strength for men who arrive worn down. Ask God to lift the weariness of work and responsibility, so that each man can return home with fresh energy for the days ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full version early on the first morning, while the house or cabin is still quiet and coffee is brewing. Sit near a window if you can, and let your hands rest open on your knees or around a warm mug. If you are attending with a friend, pray it together before the first session, and take turns reading a paragraph each so that both of you hear the other’s voice asking God for the same things.

If you are not able to pray aloud, read the prayer silently and pause after each sentence to let your own concerns surface. Keep a pen nearby to write down any name or situation that comes to mind, and bring that list back to God during the closing circle or on the drive home. Your wife, your pastor or a trusted friend back home could also pray this prayer for you while you are away.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before each man who came to this retreat and walk beside him through every hard conversation. May he be the one who keeps watch over your going out and your coming in, and may you return to your home known more deeply by God and by your brothers. The peace of Christ be upon you all.
