This prayer is for the Thanksgiving holiday, whether you are gathering a full table of family and friends or spending the day quietly and far from home. Pray it at the start of the meal, during the drive over, or in the early morning while the kitchen is still quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Blessings for Thanksgiving

Father, thank You for this day set apart to remember what You have given us. Some of us come to the table with full hearts and some with heavy ones, and You know which is which. Be near to the one who is grieving an empty chair, the one who is anxious about money or health, and the one who has traveled a long way and wonders whether they belong. Let this meal be more than food. Make it a place where people are truly seen and truly fed.

Lord, bless the hands that prepared this food and the hands that will clean up after. Bless the children at the table who are loud and restless, and the older ones who are quieter than they used to be. Give us patience with one another and kindness in our words, especially when old tensions rise. Help us to notice the small gifts in front of us, the ordinary grace of warm bread and familiar voices, and to thank You for them out loud. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank You for this table and the people around it. Thank You for the food, for the hands that made it, and for the company we are sharing. Where someone is missing, hold them close. Where someone is hurting, give them peace. Make us grateful for what we have today, and help us to be a blessing to the people we are with. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 100:4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly before the meal begins. Let the words about entering with thanksgiving shape your attitude toward the day, and then speak your own thanks to God for the particular gifts you see around you.

Psalm 107:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple call to gratitude. Name one specific reason you are thankful for God’s goodness this year, and let the verse become the opening line of your own prayer of thanks.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God for a thankful heart in every circumstance, including the hard ones at the table. Pray that gratitude would be a habit you practice with others, not only a feeling you wait for.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the priestly blessing, and it works well spoken over each person at the table. Pray it slowly over your family or guests, asking that the Lord would keep, favor and bring peace to each one by name.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the people gathered with you, asking that peace from Christ would rule in their hearts. Ask God to help you choose peace over argument when conversations turn difficult during the meal.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version just before the food is passed, with everyone standing or seated and hands resting on the table. If you have young children, invite them to say one thing they are thankful for before the prayer ends. You might also pray it privately in the kitchen while you finish cooking, letting the steady work of your hands match the steady rhythm of the words.

If you are alone this year, pray the shorter version by a window or at a chair you usually leave empty. You could also ask someone you trust to pray this prayer with you by phone or video. Thanksgiving is a day when many people feel the absence of others, and praying together, even from a distance, can remind you that you are not forgotten.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless you and keep you on this day of thanks. May His face shine on you and bring you peace, and may the people gathered around you feel His love through your kindness. Go into the rest of the day with a grateful heart, knowing that the God who has been faithful all year is still at the table with you.
