This is a written prayer for a prayer group to pray together, asking God to unite the people gathered, guide their requests, and keep their hearts honest before him. Pray it at the start of your meeting, before the first request is shared, or whenever the group needs to remember why it has come together. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak from there.

Christian Prayer for a Prayer Group

Lord, thank you for gathering us in your name. We come to you as a group of people who have brought our fears, our hopes and our tired bodies into this room, and we do not want to pretend that we have it all together. Some of us are carrying a diagnosis we have not yet told our families about. Some are waiting on a job offer, a court date, or a phone call from a child who has stopped answering. Some of us are simply worn out from pretending to be fine at work all week. You already know every name on the list we are about to read, and you know the things we are too embarrassed to say out loud.

Be present among us now. Quiet the rush in our minds and make us attentive to one another. Where someone speaks through tears, give the others patience to listen without rushing to fix. Where someone is angry at you, let them say it honestly, because you can bear it. Keep us from gossip, from showing off our spiritual vocabulary, and from leaving here no different than we came. Let our words be few and true, and let our prayers reach past this room into the lives of the people we love and the neighbors we often forget.

Father, we ask for the sick, the grieving, the lonely and the anxious, and we ask for ourselves as well. Hear us as we bring these requests to you, and answer in ways that show us your care, even when the answer is not what we hoped for. We trust you with what we cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we are gathered before you, and we need you here. Settle our hearts and open our ears to each other. Hear the requests we are about to share, the ones spoken and the ones held silently, and meet each person where they are. Keep us honest, kind and patient with one another. Let this time remind us that we are never praying alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”

(WEB)

Jesus promises his presence wherever two or three gather in his name. Begin by thanking him that the group does not depend on how large it is or how eloquent anyone sounds, only on his name being the reason you meet.

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

(WEB)

Paul pairs anxiety with prayer and thanksgiving. Use this verse to bring each worry in the room to God specifically, naming it aloud, and to thank him for at least one thing before you ask for anything else.

James 5:16

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

(WEB)

James links confession and prayer with healing and righteousness. Let this verse give the group permission to admit struggles honestly, then pray for one another with the seriousness and warmth the verse describes.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Bearing one another’s burdens is the practical side of a prayer group. Read this verse slowly and ask the Lord which specific load one person in the room might help carry this week, through a meal, a ride, or a phone call.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted. Pray this for anyone in the group who is grieving or discouraged, asking God to draw close to them in a way they can feel, and for the others to notice and respond with gentleness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Read the main prayer aloud before the group begins its requests, so everyone hears the same words and feels invited into them. If the room is large, one person can lead the opening and closing lines while others take turns on the middle paragraph. Keep a written list nearby, or a notes app on a shared phone, so that each person’s concern is spoken back to God by name rather than blurred into a general request.

Choose a regular time and place that the group can keep, such as a Wednesday evening in a living room or a Thursday lunch in a quiet corner of the church. Before you pray, have everyone sit still for a minute with their hands open on their knees, which helps the mind settle. Invite the people who cannot come in person to send their requests ahead, and let the group pray for them by name so that absent members still feel held.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this group and keep each one of you. May he make his face shine upon every person who has shared tonight, and give them peace that steadies the heart. May the people you have prayed for feel the nearness of God in the days ahead, and may you go out from this room knowing you are loved and not forgotten.
