This prayer is for the single parent who is carrying the whole weight of a home alone, whether through divorce, widowhood, or a partner who is simply not there. Pray it in the early morning before the house wakes, in the car between drop-offs, or late at night when the to-do list will not quiet down. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the specific needs in front of you.

Christian Prayer for a Single Parent

Father, you know what it is to carry more than one person can hold. I am doing this alone, and some days I feel the weight of every decision, every bill, every bedtime and every hard conversation settling on my shoulders at once. Thank you that I am never truly alone, because you are with me in the kitchen at six in the morning and in the quiet after the kids are asleep. Give me wisdom for the choices I have to make without a second opinion across the table. Help me to know when to act and when to rest.

Lord, I pray for my children. Give them a sense of security that does not depend on having two parents in the house. Where they feel the absence of someone, meet them there and fill that space with your presence and with good people who love them well. Protect their hearts from the anger, grief, or confusion they may carry, and give me patience when they struggle to express it. Let them see in me a parent who keeps showing up, even when I am tired and unsure. Keep our home a place of peace and laughter, not only of logistics.

Provide for us in the ways we need, Father, and help me to trust you with the money, the work schedule, the car that needs repairs and the gap between what comes in and what goes out. Refresh me with rest I cannot always take, and send people into our lives who will bring meals, watch the children for an afternoon, or simply listen. Remind me that you see every tired step and every quiet tear. I ask all of this in the name of Jesus, who knows the loneliness of carrying things alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am stretched thin right now. Be my strength for the next hour and my help with this one decision. Calm my children and calm my own heart. Show me the next faithful step, and give me grace for the step after that. Thank you that you are near to me in this moment. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 68:5

A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the particular way God is a father to the fatherless and a defender of the widow in your own story. Ask him to show you where he is already doing this for you and your children.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion to God in the words of this invitation. Tell him specifically what you are carrying today and ask him to give you the rest that only he can give.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your reserves are empty. Ask God to give strength where you have none, and to renew you for the work set before you each day.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a release of control. Admit that you cannot build your home or hold your family together by effort alone, and ask God to be the builder and guardian of your house.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you face a hard decision with no one to consult, pray this promise back to God. Ask him for wisdom about school, money, discipline, and every choice that falls to you alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time and place that you can protect, even if it is only five minutes. Many single parents find that the kitchen sink, the commute, or the bathroom door after bedtime works better than a formal prayer corner. Keep your hands busy if that helps you focus, folding laundry, holding a warm mug, or writing the prayer on a card you can carry in your bag.

You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a trusted friend, a church small group, or a family member to pray it with you or for you on the days when your own words run out. Some parents find it helpful to pray the prayer over each child by name, adding a line for that child’s particular needs and joys.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every sleepless night give you rest in his care and courage for the road ahead. May he strengthen your heart, guard your children, and surround your home with his unfailing love. You are not forgotten, and the God who provides for the fatherless and the widow is faithful to you and your family.
