This is a Christian prayer for caregivers, the people who spend their days and nights looking after a parent, spouse, child or friend who cannot fully look after themselves. Pray it at the start of a shift of care, in the quiet before the day begins, or in the car between appointments when you have a few minutes alone. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Christian Prayer for Caregivers
Lord, you see the person I care for and you see me. You know the medications I have counted, the meals I have tried to make appealing, the nights I have lain awake listening for a cough or a fall. Thank you that nothing about this work is hidden from you. When I feel invisible, remind me that you are watching over both of us.
I confess that some days I feel resentful, tired and short-tempered, and then I feel guilty for feeling that way. Forgive me for the harsh word and the sigh I could not hold back. Give me patience that does not depend on my own strength, and let your kindness move through me when my own supply runs out. Help me rest without shame, and let someone else take the watch when I need it.
Be near to the one I care for. Ease their pain, calm their fear, and give them moments of comfort and dignity. Give me wisdom for the decisions I face and the courage to ask for help when I do not know what to do. Carry what I cannot carry, and fill the empty places with your peace. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and I need you now. Give me strength for the next task, patience for the next question, and gentleness for the person in my care. Hold us both in your hands for this hour, and remind me that I am not doing this alone. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a regular time, such as early in the morning with a cup of tea at the kitchen table or late in the evening once the house is quiet. Keep a small card or note on the counter with the shorter version so you can read it while you wait for the kettle or a medication to take effect. If your hands are busy with washing, lifting or feeding, speak the words silently as you work.
Consider asking a friend, pastor or family member to pray this prayer for you on the days you cannot find words. Share the names of the person you care for and the specific worries on your heart. Many caregivers find that being prayed for by someone else brings a relief they did not expect.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord give strength to the one who gives so much of themselves each day. May he steady your hands, quiet your worried mind and remind you that you are loved far beyond what you can do. May his peace guard your heart and rest settle on you tonight.
