This is a written prayer for people who give themselves to others: parents up before dawn, nurses on long shifts, teachers, caregivers, volunteers, pastors and friends who keep showing up when they feel empty. Pray it at the start of a shift, before a hard visit, or at the end of a day when the giving has left you tired. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Christian Prayer for Those Serving Others

Lord, you see the people I am serving today, and you see me too. You know the names I carry and the needs I cannot fix on my own. Thank you that you are not waiting for me to be strong enough before you act. Give me patience for the person who is hard to help, gentleness for the one who is frightened, and wisdom for the decisions no one else can make for me. When I am tempted to measure my worth by how much I have given, remind me that you love me as your child, not as a worker on a clock.

Father, refill what I have poured out. Where my energy is thin, be my strength. Where my kindness runs dry, let your kindness flow through me without my pretending it is my own. Protect me from resentment when I feel unnoticed, and from pride when someone thanks me. Let the people I serve feel your care through my hands, my words and my presence, even when I cannot see the fruit of my work. I give you the outcomes that are beyond me, and I ask you to bless the small faithful acts that no one may ever record.

Lord, I also bring you my own needs for rest, for friendship and for honest help. Show me where I need to ask for support instead of trying to hold everything alone. Guard my sleep, my health and my family from the demands of my work. Teach me to stop when you say stop, and to trust that the work does not depend entirely on me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am giving myself to someone again right now, and I feel the weight of it. Give me the patience I lack and the kindness I cannot produce alone. Let your love reach this person through me, and let me rest in knowing you are at work here too. Help me take the next right step and trust you with the rest. Amen.

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

(WEB)

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel you have nothing left to give. Ask the Lord to be the source of your strength, lifting you up so that you can continue without collapsing under the load.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment before your shift, your visit or your first task of the day. Sit somewhere you can be still, such as a chair by a window, a parked car before you go inside, or a corner of the kitchen while the coffee brews. Keep your hands busy with something simple, like holding a cup, a pen or a child’s hand, so that your body settles while your mind slows down.

You might pray this with a spouse, a friend from church or a fellow volunteer who understands the work. Praying it together can remind you that you are not the only one carrying these people. If you are a leader, consider reading it aloud to your team before a demanding week, letting each person hear the words and add a name of someone they are serving.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every quiet act of care meet you in your giving and fill you with what you cannot supply yourself. May he steady your hands, rest your heart and remind you that you are loved, not for what you do, but because you belong to him.
