This page offers Christian prayers for a church retreat, written for the days leading up to the gathering, the sessions themselves, and the drive home. You can pray the main prayer aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit. Many people pray it in the car on the way there, or in a quiet room before the first session begins.

Christian Prayers for a Church Retreat

Lord, you know why we have gathered. Some of us came tired from weeks of work and family demands, and some of us came carrying something we have not yet said out loud to anyone. Quiet our minds so we can hear you above the noise of travel, schedules and small talk. Let this time away from our usual routines be a place where we rest in your presence rather than simply filling the hours.

Be with the people who planned this retreat and with the speakers, cooks, drivers and volunteers who make it possible. Give them strength when things go wrong, patience with one another, and joy in the work they have done in secret. Help each of us to receive what others offer us, and to offer what we have without keeping score. Draw us closer to one another as a church family, not as strangers sharing a building for a weekend.

Speak to each heart in its own language. If someone needs comfort, meet them there. If someone needs honesty about a sin they have been hiding, give them courage to bring it into the light. If someone feels far from you, remind them that you have not moved. Take what we bring to you this weekend and do the work only you can do. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we are here because you called us here. Settle our hearts as we arrive. Open our ears to hear what you want to say to us, and make us willing to listen even when it is hard. Bind us together with kindness and humility this weekend. Keep us from hurrying past you in the rush of programs and meals. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

This verse invites you to stop striving and remember who God is. Before a retreat that may be full of activity, pray it slowly and let the word “still” reorder your breathing. Ask God to make the stillness real for you, not just an idea on paper.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Paul’s call to honor one another is a good thing to pray over a group that will share meals, rooms and long conversations. Ask God to show you where you tend to overlook others, and to help you put their needs ahead of your own comfort this weekend.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Retreats can leave people drained, especially those who serve behind the scenes. Use this promise to pray for renewed strength for the leaders and for yourself. Ask God to refresh what is weary, trusting that he gives strength to those who wait on him.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Many people arrive at a retreat carrying worries about family, work or health. Pray these verses over your anxieties one by one, naming them before God. Ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind to settle over the whole gathering, not only over you.

Ephesians 3:16-19

16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, 19 and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

(WEB)

Paul prays that believers would be strengthened and rooted in love. Use this passage to ask God to deepen your understanding of his love during the weekend. Pray that the church gathered there would grow in that love together, not only in knowledge about it.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the main prayer in a quiet place before the first session, if you can find one. A chapel, a walk along a path, or even a bench near the parking lot will do. Keep a pen nearby so you can write down any name or concern that comes to mind as you pray, and bring that list back to God later in the weekend.

If you are praying with a small group in the car or at a table, take turns reading sections aloud, and pause between them for silence. Invite someone who feels nervous to lead the shorter version. Ending together with a hand on a shoulder or a moment of quiet can help the group feel connected before the next activity begins.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before each person who came to this retreat and keep them as they travel home. May his peace guard their hearts, his love steady their days, and his grace meet them in every conversation. May the friendships formed here grow stronger in the weeks ahead, and may each person return to their everyday life carrying something good from this time together.
